Whoops! (Timing Belt)

Was telling the guy up stairs teh other day I was looking to build another engine.

Sadly, I didn't tell him I wasn't wanting to build my own - that I wanted to build someone else's!

So my car's timing belt got chewed up today when I was tuning... (SpoolnupTuning, smart guy)

You can see that she jumped ~6 teeth on the cam gears

And after the long-*** wait for the flatbed and then about 3 hours of work, I got about yay far:

(got all the bolts off the intake/exhaust, need to pop the valve and pull the studs to get the head off)

Looks like I'll pop the head off tomorrow and see how much damage it really did to the valves. Spose I should upgrade them now. d'oh. :domotwak:

How many miles do you have on the car? Maybe this could have been prevented with preventive maintenance?

FWIW, car has ~78k on it.

Belt had 28k on it, IF that. I put a new one in when I had built the motor the first time. (which I built ~54k)

It wasn't a matter of preventative maintenance. It was a "**** happens" kind of thing. I've already tracked down why it happened, now I just need to replace effected parts (with better, of course!) and move on down the road.

God -> Guy upstairs.

And I know what caused the t-belt failure. One of the oil lines on the cooler went bad and soiled the t-belt. It was then weakened/soft, and bound to go at any time. I hadn't been into the car hard for awhile, so it never really got any power to it for the normal day-to-day driving. Got into it hard for a tune pull, and tore the belt up.

I can see on the acc belt that also only has ~28k on it where it was wearing abnormally from being soiled too. I had already replaced the oil line, so I didn't think of the other parts that were effected.

Motor is already built (did previously), and it's got a slightly upgraded turbo.

I'd of gone bigger, but lack of funds and lack of desire for more turbo lag has made me shy away from big snails.

Oooh... I hope my timing belt is ok. 15K miles and I spilled some oil on it when I changed my cams (mivec cam leaked while I was removing it) I wiped it down as best as I could, spinning the motor by hand with the 1/2" socket...

From: somewhere testing various tires, brakes, and suspensions.
Mike, you should buy my car now as your DD.

Hopefully, the pistons are fine. For sure the valves are toast.

If I do that, I don't know which car I would run at the track, as both would have their different up/downs! Your car is just too much of a damn beast!

And yeah, I believe the pistons are OK. But the valves will be getting replaced, most likely with some SuperTech's.

I would think you'd be OK, if it didn't soak in. This oil has been on there for a god bit.
