blown turbo

I was wondering if anyone knows of a good place to get my stock turbo rebuilt.. and how much this should run. also has anyone here rebuilt their own turbo before?

a couple of days ago I noticed a high pitched whistle coming from the car under wot, Didnt think much of it and kept driving around until today when I started to notice a loud whirring type noise whenever I make boost. at first I thought maybe it was just a boost leak or somthing but now im starting to think the turbo is blown.

Remove the MAF pipe and then grab hold of the nut on the turbo's shaft with your fingers. Check for back and forth(axial) shaft play.

If it needs a rebuild then send it in to either, Forced Performance Turbocargers, in Texas, or else, Blouch Turbo Inc., in Pennsylvania.

Not sure on the cost of a rebuild kit, but you could get an 05 Turbo, which has an upgraded hotside compared to the 03 for $200 or so.

^ +1 Shaft play in the turbo fan is probably the culprit in the whistling, but it is a good idea to take it apart and check. Does the whistling intensify based on the boost increase? I wouldn't wander too far from home with this just incase something seizes...

I took the intake off already, it does have a little shaft play... not sure if its too much or not tho but yea its a whirring noise--deff turbo related, thought it was a boost leak at first till it got louder.

where can you find a stock 05 turbo for 200? id be kinda worried it would be in the same shape this ones in

I would never get an evo 8 turbo rebuilt. They go on this forum for $150-200 shipped for the full turbo, hotside, wastegate actuator, etc. Evo 8 turbos are so cheap.

I sold my 05 evo 8 turbo for $200

You can not get an Evo 9 turbo for $200, but an 8 you can. You have an 03, that turbo had a 9.8cm2 hotside and the 05 had a 10.5cm2 hotside.

Can't send it to CBRD for a BBK, as that is an Evo 9 variant turbo.

That's what I thought, the BBK is an evo 9 turbo upgrade. Not an evo 8 turbo.

You will need a conversion kit to fit an IX turbo to an 8. They sell them on most turbo websites for like $150 or so. You can rebuild the turbo yourself if you are handy with tools and you can usually pick up a rebuld kit for under $100.

Yes the 2005 turbo is a direct on your 2003 and will give you a little more HP at the same time. No conversion kit needed.
