Mine is making a horrible grinding sound whenever it turns on. Just wondering if this is a common problem or this sounds like a symptom of a failing fan. My car has very low mileage, so I'm sort of surprised if it needs a new fan. I don't even use the A/C as it hasn't worked for a while.

It looks much cleaner without. Your Air Conditioner will still operate, just not as efficent when not moving.

Yes mine failed and it was the nut on the shaft that came off.However that failure destroyed the fan shaft condensor and fan blade.Warranty saved the day with over 1200$ in parts!My early production IX uses the VIII parts and the bumper has to come off to do the repair.

 

Try rotating by hand when shut off if it is loose tighten it otherwise if noisy check if its covered under warranty. Parts stores should handle a new motor if not covered.
If it comes off when driving it could cost you big money.
