Part throttle miss-stutter-misfire @ 3000 rpm when under almost no load 3rd 4th gear

This has thrown the misfire code and may happen daily or once every couple days or MANY times in one day!!!

Just cruising with traffic in either 3rd or 4th gear at 2800-3000 rpm the car will what seems to be shutting down a cylinder!?! (Sounds like a Subaru)

Leaning into the throttle will not clear it up. It will continue in subie mode... until I let off the gas...I can slowly or quickly get back on the gas and the problem is gone... 4 cyls as usual.

All this occurs UNDER 1/4 THROTTLE!!!!! NO WOT ISSUES AT ALL!!!!
It pulls clean and hard if you mat it.

I have changed plugs (.024 gap)
Swapped out coils and wires
Air intake ram horn is secure with two cilps

Nothing has been altered shortly before the problem surfaced!
Only mod on the car is an AMS TBE with cat. NOTHING ELSE. Not even a drop-in.
It's an '03 and has 64k mi. HAS OCCURED BEFORE PUTTING ON THE EXHAUST.

Only code thrown is the 0300 random misfire

Help. Please.

When was the last time you changed your Fuel Filter? Could be particles of dirt getting stuck in the fuel injectors/injector or injector going bad.

The 03-04 8 roms had this issue. The factory has a reflash, but when i got mine reflashed I still had an occasional 0300.

I had car retuned with fix by a pro tuner. Check ECUFlash forums for the fix, if you want to do it yourself.

Did you have these same symptoms at the same rpm?
Could you actually FEEL/HEAR the misfire when it happened?
Sounds like I'm jocking a WRX.... ewwww.

I'm afraid to do any more mods until I get this issue cleared up.
I plan on taking it to AMS for a dyno-tune after I have all my mods done... I'm gonna post this over on their thread...

THANKS for the info!

Never changed filter yet.... My thinking is if it's all good WOT and everywhere else BUT 2800-3000 (consistent RPM range for the miss) I have some sort of electrical gremlin...

Id say check the recirculation hose for the bov. Sounds like a comon VTA bov problem when still using a MAF.

Change from the 008 ROM to the 015 ROM and that will either reduce the occurrence or eliminate it. If it still occurs, upgrade to the Tephra mod.

SOLUTION

Raise your knock thresholds by a few points. I am certain that the increase drive train noise caused by cams (and most mods) creates false knock. Even though we technically don't care about knock below 3000, the car does.

So. Raise the Low and Mid Knock Multipliers and watch the stutter go away.

I will try that today after work, I figured it was picking up drivetrain harmonics at lower RPMs, just been to busy to do anything about it... thanks for the real world testing Paul!

You know there is a few of us in here that continue to discover the "little things" that seem to make big differences in the drivability of the car.
