I would go with the apexi because there is a lot more evo experience with it (read: easier to get help/suggestions on) and I can only assume it costs less than the hks part simply because it's hks
But I don't have any first hand with either but I will be going with an apexi this winter for sure

Isnt there' just a nice solid A/F controller? I'm looking for one too, kinda like the APEXI one, but still in the market...

I love my S-AFC, Its easy to tune and the interface is easy to work with. Truth is, as you need more "Tweakability" you may end up moving on from either of these.. But of the two, the HKS has the advantage of being smaller and stealthier (you can put it in your ashtray opening with a boost controller) The S-AFC's advantage is its display and ease of quickly making changes.
Hope this helps, I still like the AFC better cuz I've gotten very good with it.
And Mark's right, if you have the time and patience, the EManage is quite a bit nicer and more flexible.. Its a piggyback and not a replacement ECU so its functionally still like these items, which means its still subject to the same limitations.

I opted for SAFCII because my tuner is familiar with it. Plus David Buschur & others favor it. I don't think you'll go wrong with either one, to be very honest.
