Throw Out Bearing not on Center?

This is probably a really stupid question... I just got my new clutch delivered yesterday. I was checking it out and notice that when I pop the TOB in the pressure plate and spin the TOB, it doesn't spin on center. It doesn't wobble back and forth and is very tight, but the hole in the middle of the TOB moves in circles as I spin it... I can't explain it very well but will take a video and post it when I get home.

My question: Is this a problem? The 2 other clutches I've ever installed didn't have this going on, but they weren't on an evo either.

Thanks

Evo clutches are vastly different from a lot of the other cars out there. The clutch is a pull style instead of a push. It is pretty hard to understand what your talking about from what you have said. I think a video might depict this a little better for us. Maybe someone else might know exactly what this could be that you are talking about. Also, what make and model of the clutch did you get.

It's a competition clutch stage 2. The best way I can describe it is this:
Pretend the pressure plate is a bowl.
Pretend the TOB is a wisk.

Instead of the wisk staying stationary and spinning inside the bowl, someone is stirring with the wisk in small circles.

It's stupid I know and yes, a video will help I am sure. Will post one around lunch time.

If you are replacing the clutch you should always use a new TOB. There is a wear pattern that the clutch folk will make and it will like to follow that pattern.

The TOB on an evo is attached to the fork on the transmission side, so "popping it in the pressure plate really isn't going to do much for you. There should be a ring in the pressure plate that when depressed by the TOB it pops the little fingers out on the ring and then depresses the clutch.

^^See if that link clears anything up, very good write up on the install with pictures

It will probably be just fine.

I'm not sure if you know but Comp Clutch had some issues with the TOB they were supplying with their kits. So did a bunch of other manufacturers. It had to be one of the aftermarket people supplying TOB's to some of these kits. People were getting noisy bearings or having them fail.

I have a Comp stage 3 in my car. I put it in myself. It works great. At the time I had heard about the TOB issues so I bought a mitsu OEM TOB. They're $50. Many people on evom will tell you to run nothing but an OEM TOB. It's a highly used important part. The aftermarket ones just don't seem to be as high of quality or as reliable. There was a visible difference in slop in the bearing I got with my kit compared with OEM.

I tried uploading a video to youtube, not sure if it's going to work or not...

I'm just going to start taking the car apart to do the clutch, if it acts up I'll deal with it then.

Thank you for the link Bobster, that'll help a lot.

Definitely get a OEM Mitsu TOB no matter what brand clutch you're running. Everything looks fine in that video you posted though; I've noticed stock clutch setups kinda look off-center like that too.

First get an OEM TOB.

I have the CCI kevlar stage 3 clutch. When I first installed it on my car the clutch pedal vibrated really bad. And pedal feel was really hard.

Turns out the throw out bearing did not sit probably through the clip. It was in crooked and there for caused that issue. A friend of mine and eye manually had to straighten the clip by me holding the cluth as he pried with a screw driver. Then I would crank the car slightly to spin the clutch and repeat the process untill it was in there nice and even.

The clip on the TOB did not sit over the TOB correctly. So with a screw driver and some cranking of the motor and more trial and errors we finally got it to sit correctly.

The car drives fine now. Right after the clutch started to feel harder now similar to stock, because it also felt very very soft. On top of that the engagement point went way up high so I adjusted the clutch to where I want it to be.

Thanks for the input guys. Hopefully if someone has similar issues in the future, this thread will help them.

Okay I will definitely go get a TOB from the dealer tomorrow. I'm stuck removing the passenger's side axle from the tranny. I've pried and hammered very very hard. I've been working on it for 2 hours and I'm starting to lose my mind. Any ideas/suggestions? I got the drivers side off with only about 10mins of influencing but this one is much different...

EDIT: I finally got it off, used a prybar as a punch and hammered the axle loose.

I got hung up on the ACD line going into the transfer case. I finally decided to just take it out. I still have to slide the tc off and remove the transmission. So far I have about 9 hours invested, that's because I spent 2 hours prying off the passenger's side axle and another 2 hours making a decision about the ACD line. This install in no joke haha.
On a side note I just called the dealer and they want like $105 for an oem tob, where is everyone getting them for $50?

Stop playing with the TOB and put it on the damn transmission. Resting it on the pressure plate and spinning it represents nothing as it belongs on the transmission and will not be oriented until the transmission is on the car and fork locked into place.
