Is a turbo timer necessary?
I'm not exactly sure how long i'm supposed to be letting my car cool down. Since this is my first turbo car, i've been extra cautious with it, letting it cool down for 1-2 minutes each time before shutting it down. Is that overkill? I'm trying to figure out if getting a turbo timer is worthy enough to spend 80 or so bucks on.

A turbo timer is a waste of money. Turbo timers where recommended years ago with early turbo designs and fossil oil. Since synthetic oil does not coke, a cool down is not required after a normal drive. You should allow a couple minute cooldown after a run on the highway for extended periods and beating the crap out of the car.
I honestly believe it is a bling bling thing that many add to impress their friends. After all, if your turbo does not require timer, it must not be very big? Plus some folks are spending 300 bucks on a timer to protect their "baby", but won't check the oil level..... go figure.

Did anyone else's dealers make them watch a video before buying the car? It expressly said that you should cool down the car before shutting it off. It's in the owner's manual as well. If mitsu says we should do it, I'm going to do it. The TT is just more convenient then waiting in the car to let it cool down. And who the hell pays $300 for a timer? The most expensive timer I've seen is $150, and that's a boost gauge/turbo timer...
I believe it depends more on you than the car. I remember the manual saying you should let it cool down. I let it idle for 1-1.5 minutes. I don’t use one a TT. The CD player shows the elapsed song time as a default setting. I just look over and wait for a minute to pass while I listen to the tunes. It’s not really that long a time. I also occasionally cycle my head lights up and down just for the fun of it. If you’re the type who just likes to jump out once the wheels stop, then maybe a timer is for you

I set my timer at auto. At hard runs, sometimes I have to cool donw 5 minutes. I do not know how much I have to cool down. Sometimes, it cools down for 30 seconds. It depends how hard u were driving and how long which I always do not remember and will not try to remember so a TT with an Auto feature is what u should buy. If you just get the TT with a preset one, I rather just stay in the car a bit longer. The Auto feature is such a convenience.

The way I look at it is, I'd be in jail along ago if I were to drive my car hard enough to require a cool down period immediately before parking and shutting it down. I usually sit at a traffic light for at least a minute before parking. It pretty much doesn't matter where I'm going, there's always an opportunity to allow the car to cool down. I certainly don't blast through my neighborhood under full boost nor in the parking garage where I work.

well for me i guess it doesn't matter since i work in dc, (stop and go) or if there's no traffic, i beat the crap out of it.
i can guarentee your using less gas for 1 minute of idle, then 10 going to WOT

I had a TT on my old eclipse spyder I still wore out 2 turbo's in that car. (those turbo's were weak though)
I generally just take it easy the last few minutes of a drive. I also turn the A/C on as this forces the radiator fan on which helps with cooling. (The Turbo is located right in front of the fan)
Plus it cycles the A/C compressor regularly which is good for the long haul.
