best time for oil change?

so, is it better to change the oil after the car is driven on the road and all warmed up? OR let her cool down overnight, let the oils to drain down to oil drain pan and change the oil in AM? OR does is really matter??

I usually do it when the motor is warm, that way the oil is more viscous and you generally get the most out of the motor. It is just a personal preference though...

I just send a sample off to Blackstone Labs and let them tell me when to change it! LOL Cheaper, especially with a synthetic motor oil.

HOT!!! then the particles of crud are suspended and go out with the oil and don't just lay in the bottom of the pan.

jmelocik,

at $20 per sample if you change your own oil I don't see how it would be much cheaper. I'm not saying there is no merit to oil analysis.

Not spending $40 just for the oil and filter every 3k miles and being able to run 15k to 20k on the same oil seems like it adds up to me. I do occasionally have to buy 1 qt here and there in between to replace what was taken out during sampling. Plus it takes less time to take the sample then it does to do the oil change. Of course it isn't for everyone and this is just my opinion.

I don't do it hot because I don't want to suffer a burn. However I drive enough (a few blocks) to get the oil stirred up without it getting fully hot. This to get as much sediment out of the engine as possible.

...after a track day or three and it took 15 minutes start to finish not counting the trip to the parts store. $33 for Mobil one oil and filter plus I got a chance to look at the under side of the car and check for leaks etc. I think oil analysis is more suitable for large trucks were the cost of an oil change is price prohibitive.

And yes I do it hot maybe drive 5 miles or so at city speeds, you get burned a few times you learn how to do it without a drop of oil getting on you.

"FOR SALE: EVO 8 MINT. Oil changes ....once a year or 15k(which ever came first)"

Your idea is silly. Just change it every 3-4k like most normal people. Do you go to your dentist to tell you when it's time to brush your teeth?
