Unhappy Exhaust Odor - My Car Stinks!

At various times, during various climate and engine temperature conditions, my Evo will give off this nasty sulfur/rotten egg smell. It seems to happen when the engine is at normal to slightly below normal temperatures, when I'm NOT driving hard, but I haven't driven for more than 10-15 minutes.

It's not very consistent, but when it happens, it smells awful. And it can happen when it's 10° outside or if it's 70°. Anyone encountered this? Any explanations or solutions?

NOTE: I live in Colorado which uses a gasoline additive of 10% ethanol (corn derivative intending to reduce the "brown cloud" air pollution) during the colder months. Could this be a contributing factor? If so, why haven't my previous cars farted bad smells?

It takes a lil while for the cat to warm up to operating temperature. What mods do you have?

Ethanol is used in fuel damn near everywhere, including here in Illinois.

Chances are the cat isn't yet filtering the exhaust at full effeciency, which is usually commonplace. If you take it to a dealer, I'm sure they'll say the same thing.

If you did happen to drive hard, you'd notice an increase in the stink.

I actually noticed this smell too. Always on colder Southern California nights. I did/am not running a cat.
Does So Cal use these additives as well?

Check your gas pump. Law requires a sticker that states "this fuel contains up to 10% Ethanol."

If no sticker, no corn.

Thanks for the input (Compjoc, Sailorgoon, and Tofurky). To answer a couple of questions: I'm running a bone-stock Evo and my local gas pumps have the good 'ole ethanol disclosure.

I think I've found the answer to my question because of these limited responses: my cat isn't hot enough to burn off the offending gases.

Good luck to everyone else with this situation. I'd also encourage you to keep your windows rolled up so that the cars behind you don't think that it's actually YOU that stink. For schnizzle.

I live in Colorado and get this too. I wonder if it is because of the gas? I usually get Conoco gas. What do you get? Maybe it's just the brand. Rotten eggs. It smells like that exactly. I change my exhaust to a B & B and the smell stayed.

I use to "O-66" standard: Conoco, Texaco, and Phillips 66.

Hey chopdaddy, Where are you at? I'm in Denver. By the way my car was freakin the funk too. I figured I trashed my CAT due to running the DP?? So I got the Perrin cut-out w/o2 sim, and it hasn't smelled since.

I'm in Fort Collins. What's the DP and the Perrin cut-out deal?

i stay away from the Ethanol pumps in Cali...unfortunately Cali had a short lived requirement for all stations to have MTBE (the toxic crap that sucks up your gas mileage, creates build up in your fuel system, and can possibly kill you). Luckily this requirement was put to a halt for the toxic death reason I guess so I just go to Shell stations that don't have that crap in their gas. Great gas milage...no buildup in the fuel system, smells fine, and runs great...

I hate to break it to you. On the Evo's, it is usually the clutch making that smell. Mine only does it when I back up my driveway.
