Exclamation Is this a problem? Grease coming from rear axel

Here are some pics, but i was doing some maintenance before i take the car to the track next week and when i pull the left rear tire off i felt some grease inside the rim and did some looking around and noticed the grease was on some other stuff to, i did some looking around and it looked like is was coming from the boot at the end of the axel by the hub, maybe the boot has a cut in it or something? or is it maybe a seal in the axe? if anybody knows what this is caused by or if this is a big deal please let me know

Most likely you have a hole in the CV boot. If you drive it for long the grease will be spun out of it and the CV joint will fail.

You don't want to take your car to the track in that condition. Get it fixed then go.

I drove the car with a ripped boot like that for a year with zero problems...i eventually got it replaced and you apparently have to disassemble the whole axle to replace the boot. But just know its not a huge worry i had no problems driving around with all the grease out and ive read about others on the forum that did the same...

order the boot kit from russellm..it comes with the boot and grease and everything

^^ Agree with stated. look for a rip in the boot, I had one like that. Can you drive with no grease? Yes. Should you? NO. It could also be escaping from under the boot where its clamped to the bearing housing. I had one like that too. flung that stuff all over.

^ Wow driving for 1yr, i'm surprised your grease didn't sling out dry and start popping or breaking, lol. I rather be safe than sorry and get it fix ASAP. Most axles are recommended to install new grease and clamps, because over time being near heat, the grease gets milky and liquid type. You can go to the auto store and buy replacement boots and grease. You just need the right tools to get the job done. Fairly easy just time consuming, G/L...

Both boots are removed from the inner end of the axle. So, you need two boots not one.

Driving a short while with the boot slinging grease is probably not a big deal - well, except for the mess. Drive through a puddle and punch some road grit inside the boot and now you need a new axle.

And, yeah, they can leak from where the clamps are too if not installed correctly. I had two boot clamps leaking from the factory on my WRX. The replacement boots I installed don't leak at all.
