HKS GTII, doing it backwards...

So I just bought a bone stock Evo IX with a blown turbo at $2000 below rough trade-in value. I thought I was being smart and purchased a nice used turbo with no shaft play. Then I decided to be lazy and just have a local shop do the swap so I could focus on work. Well, the turbo I bought was for an VIII.

The only thing not on back order is the HKS GTII. My budget would be blown out of the water and I have a high dollar turbo with very few mods. I already bought a 3" exhaust, walbro pump, LICP, drop-in filter, MBC and ebay O2 housing. Then get a tune and be done with it.

So now I have this turbo that I could grow with, but what growing should I do in the future to help this turbo reach its potential. Thoughts are SpoolinUp COP, GSC S1 cams, ARP headstuds, some intake, 880cc injectors.

I just want to do what is needed, but maintain stock like drivability. My focus is going to be autocross and DD. Let me know if I missed something.

I may just do it all at once and be pissed about it for a while or do it over time. I really can't spent more then $5k on the whole project. The turbo is $2k, parts already purchased (including Evo X wheels) is $1,000. So I would only spend another $2,000 AND I need a set of GT Worx springs for the car.

I would do intake, exhaust, and fuel. Might be able to do this for under 2g's if you look around.

I think your on the right track there. Other than what you already have I would pick just pick up injectors and an intake. Get a tune and call it a day. It'll stay within your budget. Later down the line you'll be able to do more with the car when your budget allows.

definitely get injectors and tune. i would suggest 1000cc & up just in case you want to switch to e85 later down the road.

To reach full potential on the HKS, you will need a new intercooler.

Yeah, I think I'm going to just get the 1000cc injectors and a FMIC in addition to what I have.

Don't worry about cams for now, the Evo IX cams aren't going to be a limiting factor on power for you at this point just yet if you plan on running the HKS turbo on pump gas. I suggest an ETS 3.5inch intercooler and FIC 1,000cc injectors.

Don't feel pressured to do everything all at once. There's nothing wrong with bolting that turbo up to a car with the mods u have. sure its gonna be held back a little, but u just bought the car and deserve to have it running now. Thats a 400hp turbo on pump gas with all bolt ons and cams (might need something more aggressive than s1 tho). Honestly, that turbo with a full exhaust and an intake will probably make about 350whp. You prob need injectors too.

Fuel pump, Fmic from the used parts section here, tune, go play.
The mod bug will keep you buying stuff, but let it happen in time. I'd suggest your next round of mods be suspension related.

This is officially my 4th Evo and I tried so hard not to do this!

At this point, I've ordered a FMIC and just need the injectors. I will either have TopSpeed tune me later this month when they visit Tampa or maybe some guy names Alpha that Ryu and Cyloc use.

My next round of mods would be the GTWorx kit, bilstein HDs, springs and sway bar. That has to wait since I have to do all the power mods at once.

Since you state that you already ordered an upgraded IC, I would do full exhaust and intake kit. Finally I'd install a double pumper and adequate injectors and top it off with an E/85 tune.

That's not really what he's asking. He's asking what MANDATORY supporting mods he needs to do when installing this HKS turbo he was forced to buy.

In which case, FIC 1100cc (saturated) injectors, Walbro 255lph pump, Spark plugs, Used Spoolinup COP kit, ETS 3.5" FMIC kit (upper and lower pipes included), stronger recirculated BOV, and tune. Awesome street car set up. Even better autocross car.

That will support your power without choking anything but you have plenty of room to grow. Like a ported intake manifold, 65mm throttle body, ported or tubular exhaust manifold, and the list goes on.

right, i just dont think there are really that many mandatory mods.. don't need injectors that crazy, new deatschworks fuel pump 300lph, headstuds maybe, don't need plugs or COP or FMIC etc.. mandatory is different from full bolt ons to get out max power..

i'm basically full bolt ons w stock turbo planning to go to this turbo, i really don't plan on changing much.. mild injectors maybe

Agreed. Except, you dont need a expensive double pumper. A walbro 255 has proven to support more than your goals. Keep it simple.
