Clutch issues - recomendations?
Clutch issues - recomendations?
I bought a IX MR with about 90k on the clock, and the car was overall in decent shape, had a nice tune from a local shop, but I wasn't real happy with the clutch that the previous owner had in there. I believe it was a Competition clutch, but I'm not sure which one. I think the guy beat on the clutch pretty badly and it didn't feel right, so I went ahead and replaced it with a stock clutch I got Evom member, and "26k miles, 90% freeway" is how it was advertised, but that seems a little wrong - it would slip at low RPM when getting into boost
... Other than this, the clutch did okay, and I liked how the car drove / felt for the most part.
Since it was slipping, and would only get worse, I went ahead and had the shop install an Exedy Stage 1 (they wrote 1.5 on the bill ??) and that fixed the slip issue of course, but the peddle effort and chatter is more than I was expecting. The car makes about 330 whp and probably 300'ish torque I would assume. I thought these clutches drive / feel close to stock, and this was not at all the case. The real concern, however, is that I cannot shift the car like I did before with the stock clutch on there. I could do fast 2-3 and 3-4 shifts with no issue very rapidly, but right now it is very difficult to get into gear at high RPMS, it feels like it just doesn't want to go into gear the way it used to. Has anyone ever had this issue? I really hate wasting so much $$ on a damn clutch
but I wanna have something that will hold decent power (nothing crazy) and be an okay DD clutch.
I've owned multiple cars with various aftermarket clutches, and I've never had issues like these before, so I'm just trying to see what the best option would be at this point. I don't really drag race the car, so I'm not big into hard launches, etc., but of course it would be NICE if I could shift quickly while having fun driving.
Any input would be much appreciated, thanks,
Trevor

I have the same problems with my clutchmaster fx400. A stiffer front motor mount helped a little but I still get locked out all the time.
So I'm here for the same answer. Everyone is going to say twin but I don't know about the chatter

How high in the rev range are we talking about and does this ALWAYS happen?

Actually for the ammount of power he is putting down he's fine with what he has. And everyone has a different tollerance for the misc noise that comes with mods on these cars... the chatter on the exedy twin IMHO is really not that bad. I have dealt with way worse.

. And I mentioned a twin because they will NOT cause lockout and a lot of people use them in their daily.
I actually had an 04 Evo 8 years back and put an Exedy Twin on there, and that clutch felt great from what I recall... I was just trying for something not so spendy this time.
I was just thinking, would this be something that will get any better with time..? I went easy on the clutch for the several hundred miles, but when I started to drive it harder is when I noticed the issues.

edit - yeah, not shifting is not fine....
I'd really like to know why it's doing this, and none of the other aftermarket clutches (Centerforce, RPS, ACT) have given me this type of an issue.

have you tried changing the fluids yet on the transmission. if not i would try that first. i had problems like that on my car to and switched all my fluids to amsoil and now it shifts better than before.
And he's obviously he is not fine if he can't shift but the reason he can't shift is what we are trying to determine here and unless he's done a bunch of 7K launches that he's not telling us about or he got a lemon clutch from the dude on the forum I don't think its the clutch as it's a high rpm shifting issue not an all the time shifting issue.Prolly needs to change the tranny and diff fluids, bleed his lines, or it could be time to change the master and or slave cylinders. I believe I was at 70K when I changed mine.
So an Exedy stage one isn't capable of handling 330whp and 300ish tq? New news to me.

I believe the shop changed out all the fluids when they did the job, but I suppose I could ask them about that. The car was a ***** to get into gear when it was cold, and that's no longer an issue. It still feels very notchy going from 1-2 and 2-3, but I don't know if there's much I can do about that, and it isn't as bad once the car is warm.
I'm hoping one way or another we can figure out what's up... I'm going to talk with the shop on Monday about the fluids concern and see if they have any other suggestions, perhaps bring it to them and have them drive it and see what they think. They do clutches on Evos all the time, so they know what's normal and what's not. Thanks for the input everyone, and if anybody else wants to chime in with any other info, it's much appreciated.

A lot of the time you get lockout is because of the clutch design. If his situation is like mine ( I could shift at 7.5k lighting fast and never miss a beat with my stocker. But now that I have a new clutch it will lock me out most of the time even at lower rpm shifts).
Option 1- change the fluid , bleed the line, remove restrictor pill , replace master/slave, Stiffer front motor mount.... I have done that and am still plagued with the issue.
Option 2- buy a clutch that is proven to give you fast shifting and is OK for daily driving....

If you are getting high RPM, lock out, the clutch/clutch pedal was not properly adjusted or the clutch its self was installed incorrectly.
Most likely its the first option.
Most likely its the first option.

Cheers... you may just have some air in your lines but I am sure your shop will square you up man.
