Transmission/Transfer Case Leak: Need Advice

I bought my Evo 9 MR a couple months ago. I brought my car in to have a new clutch put in at a local shop. The shop leaves a message that says:

"It appears the transmission has been rebuilt, it is leaking fluid and had less than a qt when you brought it into us. The transfer case as well was low on fluid and had some sort of gasket maker on the seal."

The car was driving fine when I brought it in. No whining or other indicators. Any suggestions on what it may be and what can be done? I'm waiting to hear back from the shop but want to know what questions to ask before discussing options.

Bump.

I am wondering if it could be something other than a leaky seal? I'm trying to rule out anything major. Where are all the smart dudes? LOL
