suspicious engine noise. cant find cause
Ok a I am just short of pulling my whole engine apart just to find this horrific engine noise. It was suggested that my main thrust bearings might have been thrown, so I dropped my oil pan and found nothing wrong under the block. cranks good, no metal shavings, large metal pieces, or any play in the rods. Where should I go from here? I have looked at my head as well. cams seem fine, can't see any problems with my valves either. I am about to drop my tranny and see if something is busted in there. I am a noobie with cars so I need to know if an expert can make any more suggestions on where to look for this rattle sound in my engine.
ya is the noise you hear high pitched or is it like a low thud type noise? it could even be a leaking exhaust gasket like on the o2 housing to turbine housing, etc.
you can youtube for sounds also to give you an idea.. ie.. lifter tick, rod knock, exhaust leaks, etc

Great news everyone but also bad news....the turbo is bad. tons of shaft play but the noise sounds exactly the same as the ones on youtube with similar issues
If you have a loose or missing bolt on your 02 housing, the gap can make a loud clicking noise like your valve train is shot, or your bearings are toast. It can get really loud with very little gap.
If you take some vacuum hose, and use it like a stethoscope..put the hose in different areas and you should be able to find out where it's loudest, and pinpoint the problem.
