If you have a stock engine or a stage 4 engine it should still sound smooth when you do the screw driver to exhaust and head check. The lifters have a very distinct sound. And if you put the screw driver to the valve cover it will be loudest at the oil filler cap. My other question is, if you had the money to get the whole engine built, how do you not have a couple extra bucks to get the gsc lifters? What does itm say makes their lifters better than stock?

i built the engine 20k ago, a few months ago i changed out cams and springs from brian crowers to GSC. the only engine parts that r still original r the lifters and rockers. i didnt buy new lifters because i saw nothing wrong with them when i did my build. plus they r easy enough to replace. i had an evo shop install my gsc stuff because i no longer had a garage to do it in plus i wanted my head checked by their machine shop. i knew the new head setup would b noisy with the stiffer springs and bigger cams. i just think the old lifters r giving up at this point.

i have tried listening around with a screw driver but never realy could get a sense of where the sound was coming from other than the head area. if the new lifters dont work then i will prolly take it and have it looked at by a reputable evo shop.

ive put enough time and money into this car and im on a "im only fixing something when it wears out stage" im not putting anymore into then i have to.

Well like I said listen where the manifold meets the head and the valve cover. When you change the lifters just check the rockers for wear. They should be fine, just be careful with the lifters when you change them so you don't put a scratch in a cam lobe. Just some general info about building a head. If you change the springs and cams on a 4g63 you want performance lifters. The stock lifters can't handle the extra lift. the internal springs will wear out faster than a hookers V on a good weekend. The gsc lifters are designed to handle stronger valve springs and extra lift. They have a much stiffer internal spring.

Be careful though because if you are still running stock clearance on your pistons the extra stiffness will make your valves open a tinny bit more than with stock lifters. So if you have a very aggressive cam profile you want to be careful of your valve to piston clearance.

I just read up on the itms they are a stock replacement with bigger oil relief holes in the side. They don't have stiffer springs like gsc does

They might last a while but I think with that big of a cam they won't last more than a year.

As long as the valve reliefs are bigger than stock you'll be fine

changed lifters lastnight. i found debri in the rocker arm pin hole on 2 of them. all old lifters were replaced but they were all holding pressure. i didnt get to do the rev procedure yet, as it was 11 pm when i was done. i did drive around for a few minutes which helped but not like reving will.
