ticking/knocking sound at idle
Well the one similiar noise I had was a bad wristpin bushing, it was a very light noise under load for 20k miles then one day I did a 2nd gear pull and BAM CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK...Wristpin bushing finally committed suicide. To diagnoise it I unplugged the injectors while running one at a time and cylinder #3 was the only one that made the noise change so I knew it was cyl 3. Then I put a long screwdriver/extension/w/e down the plug hole so it rests on the piston so I can see it rise and fall with the piston as I'm turning the engine over with a 1/2 ratchet on the crank bolt and once it was on its way down I pushed down on the extension and I felt a bit of slop then it stopped. Indicating wrist pin or rod bearing but I knew it was the wristpin since I had replaced all the bearings in the past and the noise was still there. I did it to all the other cylinders and the extension had no give it all. Try it
after replacing my valvecover gasket last week i noticed my exhaust cam lobe that i pictured b4 had now started making contact with the cam journal and 2mm of that rocker was off the lobe. i contacted greg at GSC and he informed me that the evo 8 had 5 different last cam journals and that mine must have been one with the extreme measurement. he sent me a new cam that will work and i will b installing it tomorrow. greg was a real standup guy and im glad im using his products.
as far as piston rings, thats something i can look at in the spring. im running wiesco hd's with their rings. this sound has still not changed the drivability in anyway and i have listend from the bottom and cannot hear it in the oil pan so i am ruling out bearings.
i will let u guys know if the new cam changes the sound.

Thanks for the update.
I'm getting a slight tapping on tick over that only comes when the engine is fully up to temp. I have installed some 3mm adjusters which has made it a lot better but not fixed it 100%

I also noticed that one of my cam lobes was extremely close to the journal (similar to what you have) I have Brian Crower 272 cams installed though. I will try a 5w40 grade oil, & drop the 10w60 I have in now to see if that makes a difference. I'm guessing the 5w40 will make it worse but we shall see.
Keep us posted please.

i am having the same ticking when the car is fully warmed up. i had the same tick about 5 months ago and was burning oil only at idle. i had the valve stem seals replaced and a broken supertech dual spring replaced and the ticking/ oil burning was fixed. same problem just came back after 6k miles.
new cam is in and the lobes matched up better than stock. comparing the two cams it looks like a different core. the sound changed but i could b do to that fact that the car was warm in a heated garage for the first time since summer. but im hopefull.
just an update.
the weather has gotten warmer and my sound is still present. yesterday i was able to remove my oil pan and inspect things. the oil pickup screen had silver nonmagnetic shavings. they didnt look like bearing material but more like debris from my rebuild break-in or even from the head being decked. also maybe even from the cam lobe that was rubbing the journal. so after cleaning the screen i checked the rods for play. none of them moved and i also checked the pistons with a long screw driver to see if there was any play up and down, nothing.
my bottom end looked brand new. i could even see the magic marker that i wrote on the bottom of each piston with. so i put everything back together and changed the oil filter then started the car and let it warm up so i could then do a compression test.
compression was - 170,165,170,170.
so im still misding something but im running out of things to check. not losing oil, coolant, and no exhaust smoke. oil psi is good and so is my afrs.
i will add pics of the debris tomorrow.

Wow, sounds like you have decent vital signs on the engine overall.......must be something stupid.
One time I had a timing belt tensioner get just a TOUCH loose, and what would happen is that the little hydraulic piston on the tensioner would rattle against the tensioner arm, giving the illusion of a slight knock as I revved it. I re-tensioned it and I was good to go.

opening the oil port on the head. after your head has been milled a few times like mine has the trough is small and limits the amount of oil going to the head. so from what i read this causes the lifters to not keep a proper level at all times.
