4g63 trans question

I'm going to be buying an evo 1. But it has gear clatter and no 3rd or 4th gear. So. Need a tranny. Would an older 4g63 trans off of a talon or older eclipse bolt right up? I'm new to mitsubishis, so I'm not sure of the part interchangebility. Please help!

Buying an Evo "1" as a mitsu noob is a brave thing.

The Evo 1 trans is a bit different in that alMOST all of the parts are beefier than the DSM stuff. Steel shift forks for all 5 gears (vs. aluminum iirc). The gear ratios are all different and the Evo 1 (for the record) has the tallest 1st gear of any mitsubishi. I think the ring gears are different, and the input shaft, 1st and 2nd gearsets need to be used together because of the insanely tall 1st gear. There was a good post about it on one of the DSM forums somewhere a bit ago.

In short, the Evo 1 has the beefiest transmission of any mitsubishi (arguably). I know people swap stuff around, but you're going the wrong way, and thats playing with fire.

Get the tranmission codes off the case. And do some searching on the web (not evom specifically) as many of the DSM guys would probably know a bit more than I.

well thats good to know. im definetly not a noob to cars, im a certified chevy tech, so im not scared to learn! sounds like i should just rebuild it, assuming part availability from japan is still available. and yes, research is always good! thank you for your info! my buddy is pretty knowledgeable with evos for the most part, so we should be able to figure it out

The DSM people back when were bending or breaking shift forks constantly. As I recall, we never heard of steel shift forks.
