Oil lamp light

First question, does this light come on for oil pressure or oil level? My issue is the light is coming on randomly, like flickering on and off, mostly at idle, which leaves me to believe its an electrical issue more then an oil level or pressure issue. Anyone else exp this? I have checked the oil level and it's right to the full mark. Thanks

It's for pressure.

The sensors have a tendency to fail, it's a common problem. If you've got no leaks and the dipstick reads full, replace it.

Light will also come on if the balance shaft spins free and isn't blocking the hole in the block like it should. It will flicker on and off at idle and go away barely when you start moving or give the car some gas. Listen for any abnormal rattling from the engine.

just a heads up, you should replace the sensor ASAP and see if that is the fix. I had the flickering oil light problem adn found so much evidence that it was almost certainly the sensor failing that i was more or less at ease until i got around to fixing it. Fast forward a little bit, and and a flickering light suddenly turned into a solid light. A balance shaft bearing had failed, so teh balance shaft in general, and was somehow airating (spell check) my oil with air bubbles. Obviously not good.

So do the cheap fix on teh sensor, and if you still have the light you should definitely get it checked out by an Evo specific shop to find out the cause. Oil is serious business.

Damn, i had no idea that the balance shaft could cause this issue. Im really glad the sensor failed in my favor..

Wow, thanks for the great feedback guys, does anyone know offhand about how much the sensor runs and where it's located?

Ok did some research, just to confirm, on the evo 8 block the oil pressure sensor is on the back of the block under the intake manifold and with the evo 9 it's attached to the plate that the oil liter screws onto?

Just go pick one up from the dealer, it wouldn't cost too much. I wouldn't install an aftermarket one.

Bump, just picked up a new sensor, probably also gonna pick up an oil pressure gauge too, so are you guys using anything on the threads, Teflon tape? Teflon paste?

I wrapped a couple layers of Teflon around it, it was sucky to get to, had to use a 12 point 1" wrench because I couldn't get a socket on it due to the front passenger side axel being in the way

How did the Teflon tape work? I did that too 5,000 miles ago and now it's leaking.
