Talking Looking to buy an evo need some advice

Hey I read the thread about high mile evo but I had some questions on a deal im looking at.

This is a dealer with an evo 9 for cheap in but has 110000. Everything on the car is bone stock no exhaust no nothing. Inside looks a bit stained not like somebody trashed it but they for sure werent the best owners. Short of running a compression and leak down test which I will bring my own stuff and test it there before I buy it. Is there anything else I can do to make sure this car is going to last

I will get a carfax before going down to see it in person BUT THE BIGGEST THING THATS GOT ME ABOUT THIS BONE STOCK CAR.....is the tranny and clutch have been replaced. Now I get the clutch but TRANY??!?!?!??!?!?! This has a huge red flag for me! Now im not evo expert like most of you but this to me is a sign that someone was rather ruff on the car even if it was left stock. Or it could mean at one time it had some serious mods and maybe the converted it back to stock? I would love to get your guys OPT about this.

Honestly at most right now im looking at doing is full bolt-ons intake down pipe exhaust injectors and tune. Maybe e85 down the road. So does this usually put a heavy strain on the car? From what ive read and compiled on this wonderful site it seems to be very mild from 98% of you guys who have done it.

Another question I had and I know this is gunna spark a fire but im having a hard time finding a good lancer evo down here. Honestly I just plain dont trust 90% of people who say there cars havent seen heavy mods. The other part is evo 8s are around the same price as this clean tittled evo 9 and most 8's by me are in the 90k-110k. So i guess my question is for the same price keeping in mind full bolt ons and tune would you guys lean towards the 9? or would the 8 be the better choice. Ive read that the 9 has improvements as well as some corners they cutt that the evo8 did right? Just want to know your guys imput?!?!

Thanks guys got money in my pocket and it hasnt burned a hole in my pants this bad since I was in 4th grade and pogs came out lol. Thanks for your guys help sorry for the bad grammer and spellin

Hey man welcome to evom. Good luck on the hunt for your Evo. As far as the current Evo 9 you are looking at:

1. The transmission could have been replaced simply due to the customer complaining enough about something they didn't like about it. Evo transmissions can be finicky in general. I wouldn't be overly worried about. Just make sure you drive the car and see how well it shifts into each gear. Make sure you drive it a bit hard during your test drive and shift it in the upper rpm area as most guys have lock out issues in the upper rpms.

2. Doing a full bolt on car with a stock turbo setup isn't going to put a heavy strain on the car as long as you use good products, get a proper tune, keep up with maintenance, and don't beat the **** out of it everyday. There are plenty of Evos on here pushing 500-600whp on the factory block with larger turbo setups and supporting mods.

3. As far as purchasing a car with heavy mods... why not? You could end up with a decent deal saving you lots of time and money in the long run. Of course it could completely backfire as well so I can understand not wanting a heavily modded car. When I bought my second Evo I went with one that was pretty heavily modified, but I made sure to check into everything before I purchased the car. I talked to the tuner / shop that did most of the work and I talked with the engine builder as well. If you do your homework prior to purchase you can end up with a good deal. Not everyone is trying to bail out because the car has issues. Some just get tired of one car and want to move on to something else.

4. Evo 8 vs. Evo 9 has pretty much been beaten to death around here. If you like the look of the 8 and find a clean one, then by all means scoop it up. Bolt on for bolt on, on the stock turbo setup the 9 will make a little more power, but I wouldn't let that deter you from picking up a clean Evo 8.

I picked up a "stock" never modified 8 from a member on here. 2nd day of owning it clutch was slipping, tranny was grinding in 5th.

Also pulled the head and what do you know, head studs lol

So dont believe its stock.

btw I bought it with 85k on it and its at 98k now with no other major issues knock on wood

Sort of like me, I bought an Evo 9 (looking stock) with spun rod bearing, when I started tearing it down I was finding more issues. Snapped bolts on manifold (different turbo), cut out bumper (bigger intercooler).

When I split t-case from tranny, piece of main-case on the t-case fell off, brake rotors are totally shot.

Still got a good deal, but I could have negotiated a better one :P
