Engine cutoff - white smoke out of intake/conefilter

I was hopping on the freeway tonight and while in third gear, there was an audible pop and the engine shut off. I rolled to a stop and white smoke was coming out of the intake cone filter.

I know a blown head gasket causes white smoke out of the pipes, but how about this? Could it be the head gasket?

Stock turbo/cams, E85. ~18k miles on the current head gasket that was put in with some ARP headstuds.

Thanks guys.

I tried starting it up and it turned over a few times then started but was super low RPMs and it died again.

All the visible ones were fine. When I tried to turn it over after letting it sit for a bit, the white smoke started coming out of the intake again.

check your oil for any contamination. Also look at all your ic pipes...not just the visible ones....one may have popped off. Remove upper timing cover and see if your timing belt slipped or is loose.

Yeah I'll check when I get home from work. Was on the side of the road in the middle of the night so didn't check them all. Any ideas what exactly is causing the smoke? I wouldn't think a popped IC pipe would cause that. I've popped a couple before over the years and no smoke. Thnx.

No idea on the white smoke...I had some smoke before when mine popped...it was cold out too...not sure if the temp would add to the smoke or not....

Let us know the outcome and GL!!

That's what I was going to say, check the coolant return line maybe it got clogged causing too much pressure in the coolant line thus blowing a seal or something?

Ouch. That sucks man, hopefully the compression #'s come out alright. This gives you a reason to go bigger turbo!!

When I blew the turbo on my SER I had (B13 SR20DET) it also blew the piston. I'm assuming parts from the turbo went into the engine and got wedged in the cylinder with the piston. Needless to say, there was plenty of smoke from that. I had smoke coming out of the intake, intercooler piping, exhaust, dipstick, pcv, catch can and I even found out where all my exhaust leaks were!

When my car died and white smoke enveloped it, I had burned up three pistons. Compression check it.
