Exploding sparkplug / coil on a stock car under half throttle?

Cruising along the other night at 70 on the highway, the car gently bucked like it was running out of gas, when it did it a second time I pulled over and shut the car off. Looked around really quickly to make sure it wasn't something stupid like a loose charge pipe and restarted the car. Now it sounded like it was down a cylinder. Popped off the wires one-by-one until I got to #4 and it came out like this:

The plugs are about 14k miles old and the coils are still the originals. Gonna pull the head this weekend and hope that the plug debris didn't gangbang its way out the engine and through the turbo.

I'm pretty pissed about this since I've owned the car since new and aside from a split radiator, this is the only thing that's failed in 10 years / 148k miles.

That does not look good.

Hopefully no other damage is found.

On a slightly better note, I've seen low miles oem coils for sale for $50 bucks on EvoM just yesterday....

GL getting this sorted out!

OK found a set for you CHEAP with less than 45K...per OP. Scroll down a couple pics....

Holy sh*t that's some crazy looking carnage right there! Im sorry to hear about that. Hopefully your engine didnt injest the electrode to the spark plug along with that other crap that broke off. Good luck with the surgery. On a different note, what would cause a coil and spark plug to take a dump like that? It seriously looks like it blew up.

Looks like the heat from combustion chamber actually made it out to the coil pack. Sorry man.

That's my reason for the post. I'm completely baffled at how this happened.

Essentially no load on a stock boost car.

Maybe a bad fuel injector causing that cylinder to knock.
