Engine won't turn, even by hand
Engine won't turn, even by hand
I did a quick pull on the highway. After the pull, I heard light tapping. I took the off-ramp , was driving slow, and noticed the temp gauge was 3/4 up. I sped up a little and the temp went back down to normal. Then loud knocking and the engine shut down. It wouldn't turn anymore. It seems like its binding or something is keeping it from turning. I can't move it all by hand. I took the accessory belt off and all pulleys spin freely. I took timing cover off and everthing is timed and tensioned. HHEEELLLPPPPPPP

Try to hand turn it with the clutch pedal in , if no go pull the timing belt cover and make sure the timing belt didnt come apart . Tried hand cranking it counter clockwise ? Ive seen the same issue on a Evo before when a main bearing locked up and there was no metal in the oil .
^^ It's possible the main bearing seized like 02lanceres said but the pistons might have seized to the cylinders too. How much oil came out? Could have been low on oil and that could have caused the seize.
I would say rod knock.... but valve train should be fairly easy to check... just pull the valve cover off and make sure everything seems about right(springs, retainers, keepers, rocker arms) did you bleed the lifters... even though I don't think it would end up sounding like that... and double check timing... but doesn't sound well at all..

I'm 99% certain nothing in the valve train can cause that sound... Especially not being mivec. If your timing jumped maybe but if that were the case it wouldnt magically unlock itself... To me it sounds like a rod came apart...
I already popped the valve cover and everything was in check. lifters have pressure, everything lined up and tight. I am gonna drop the pan tomorrow and take look around. I will check back tomorrow

Take the spark plugs out and shine a light down there if you don't have access to a boroscope. If nothing obvious at least it should be easier to spin without the plugs. If it still wont budge then defintaly pull the pan. That should tell you for sure whats going on.
Time to rebuild the block man. Sorry. I went through 9 months ago myselft; spun rod bearings 1 and 3 on a road course.
