Maybe burning coolant? How hard to replace head gasket?

a buddy of mine said he smelt waffles when i was driving in front of him when i was getting on it. It doesn't smell like waffles at idle.

what should i do?

I just dropped 1500 on clutch tob and pressure plates so funds are a little low.

my tuner who works only on evos is 2 hours away

do i have to go to the tuner or could a regular shop replace the head gasket?

Its my first time dealing with heads of engines so i have no idea how to test something if its broken. looking for a little help here.

how much am i looking at to replace the entire head. how much am i looking at to replace valves retainers.

Im basically lost on this topic

thanks in advance for the help

first off, is your car smoking white out the tailpipe? or smoking in excess when you get on it? are your coolant levels low and or dropping?

also if you where having to replace the head gasket, you wouldnt have to replace anything other than the the gasket and thats it.... although while people are in there, they tend to put in arp head studs for a more reliable seal.

but the job isnt to hard at all, just time consuming and a PITA. im sure theres a how to thread of how to change one on here.

however you should MAKE SURE thats your issue before even spending a dime on that job.

yes the car is smoking out of the tail pipe when i get on it. i marked my coolant level today and i will check it when time comes. about a week ago it was empty. I haven't checked it in a really long time tho.

yes i have all of the signs im burning coolant.

what do i do next

how would i go about knowing what exactly it is that's wrong with it?

can a regular mechanic shop do the diagnostic?

yeah then it very well could be your head gasket. yes a mechanic shop should be able to diagnose the issue and let you know what they think it is.

if its bad enough yes, also if your burning it out the tailpipe your getting it into your engine your exhaust somehow, only way that can happen is if your head gasket is leaking ever so slightly into your cylinders, or your turbo is dumping coolant into exhaust because its going bad.

have you ever had the boost turned way up where you could have lifted the head?

your car will smoke to if you have bad valve steam seals or bad turbo seals, but thats blue smoke, so im just making sure your seeing white smoke.

my car used coolant out of the over flow bottle for 3 years, never had a coolant issue or smoking , never did figure out why alot of people have that issue. but if your coolant level in the actual radiator is getting lower and lower, then you have an issue.

I dont know the exact color smoke. I will find out today

im tuned for 26 lbs and making 350 on stock turbo and stock block

so maybe my turbo is going? I'll find out what color smoke is pooring out and ill check my plugs to see if coolant has touched those. then ill get back to here.

thank you

One possibility in your case and maybe also in the OP's case (where coolant slowly disappears) is a bad upper seal in the radiator cap or a loose hose between the cap and the jug. In either case radiator vapor or liquid can escape.

+1

I'd do a simply cooling system pressure test before anything else. It could be a small hole/leak in the radiator, hose(s) or like barneyb said the rad cap. I've seen hundreds of radiators with pin hole leaks.

No, you can have a blown HG but not have any overheating. Depends on how exactly the HG is blown.
