looking at evo with bad tranny...help...

ok guys so a guy I know has an Evo and will give it to me at a good price the only thing is that 3rd and 4th gears are non existing...reverse,1st, and 5th work fine...when you shift into 3rd or 4th and let go of the clutch the car just keeps rolling like if it was in neutral...what can it be and can any tranny shop locally fix this? I'm new to evos so i really need some info...I heard of shep but i figure it must be a process getting a tranny shipped out etc...what do you guys think would be my best course of action? I'm a bit mechanically inclined and I really like the car but if it's too much hassle maybe it's best i take a step back and relax...thanx guys I look forward to reading your responses...

A lot of posters on this site think the Evo trans is a mystical beast only to be worked on by Shep or a couple of others.

I think any shop that is worth their salt could do it without much problems. It's just gears and bearings and shift forks.

It appears that this car has been BEAT on hard if both those gears are gone. I would be real cautious on it. There could be a lot more beneath the skin. I would most likely pass if I was the one looking at it.

Call TRE. Just had my trans built there. Amazing work. As for a price, it gets expensive. Parts are not cheap depending on the damage and what it needs. The trans I sent had broken teeth on the final drive. The metal debris tore up the 1, 2, 3, 5th gears and the input shaft plus bearings. It totaled around $3200 all said and done. Plus labor to R&R the trans.

If you can get the car for a great deal and can do it yourself, its not a terrible idea.

well money is an issue which is why im trying to get a deal on the car...iplan on dropping the tranny myself and putting it back in...i just read through a how to someone made on this site and while it looks like a pita its not impossible...im used to fwd trannies...ive installed a couple of clutches but never awd...it will be a learning experience but with patience and hard work i think i can do it god willing...i will look at the car in the day light tomorrow and do a compression test etc...it idles fine, no weird noises...engine felt and sounded healthy but of course it has to be checked out...i was looking at shep site and it says about $800 or so for the tranny and i think about $400 for transfer case...they change all gears and alot of internal parts when they do it...idk...i guess it would be best to call shep to find out more info because i dont want the car to be sitting for months while i wait for them to get the tranny back to me...does anyone know how their turn around times are? i wish i knew someone local who could rebuild this thing for me but i dont...i guess i need to ask around...like i said, im new to evos but im willing to learn and listen to all advice...

If you find someone local who knows what they are doing you are looking at $1500 to $1700 to pull the tranny, rebuild it and reinstall it. That assumes you don't need gears. If you do it'll be more.

A lot adds up, make sure you overestimate than under. Consider fluids, bolts, nuts and what not you may have to change. These can be little things but believe me after doing my engine 3 times already these tiny things add up quick.

Maybe if you open it up there will be an issue with TOB, Clutch or Flywheel, you never know, like in my case I split tranny from t-case and piece of t-case falls off the housing, so be prepared, make sure you have these talking points working for you when making the deal, i've been there and done that I wish I negotiated the deal better.

Buying a broken car, you can't test it and you don't know where the gremlins are, i've spent $$$$$ over what I thought I'd spent thinking I'm getting a KILLER deal. Just to undo the STUPID things previous owner did cost me arm and a leg.

i hear ya...damn i was a bit excited about this but now im starting to double think myself...well...my plan was to drop the tranny myself to save $ then have someone fix it...i mean, if the thing has a 1st, 2nd, 5th, nd reverse but 3rd and 4th act like the car is in neutral then i suspect that tranny is in serious ****...i mean, i just dont see how this could be...i thought well, maybe the gears were destroyed but if that so how can you put it in 3rd or 4th without any grinds or anything, let go of the clutch, and itll act as if it was in neutral...this is awkward as hell to me...i wish i knew someone locally who knew their stuff and was good at this but im lost in the rebuilding tranny field...when he took me for a ride there was no whine or any weird noises so im hoping tcase is ok...lets see what happens tomorrow if the engine and everything else checks out...

Or, you find a used, low mileage transmission here on the forum for under 1k, and call it a day.

Dont underestimate the price of bolts!!! Those things are expensive!! Im swapping out my turbo and the studs on the turbo broke off. You know how much it costs for one flange nut? It costs $12 just for one, and I need 2 of them. So thats $24 just for two flange nuts. Dont underestimate the costs of things with these cars lol

Post some pics of the car. And the mileage.

Besides the trans, you will need to factor in basic maintenance when buying a used car. Also, while the trans is out, check the clutch, throw out bearing and rear main seal.

You should try to find a used trans to save on money but you never know what has been done to it.

A good price is relative--if moneys tight as stated, walk away. It could be a simple as a cable or a replacement of almost everything.

well money is tight to buy a regular price one lol...if it really is just the tranny I have money to fix it and that's not a bad idea about buying a used one but as stated I'll never know in what condition it is...damn $12 for a nut!? Wtf!? Does it screw and unscrew itself? If I get it I'll post pics...

I thought I was getting a deal, with what thought to be a deal on a broken car, after all said and done, I could have bought a working Evo. Just FYI.

This man speaks the truth. You cannot test a broke car. I have found out in my personal experiences that if someone is selling a broke car, there is usually other issues that were not fixed and it just became too much for the owner.

I bought my EVO with a broken tranny, and I too was told it was just the tranny. I thought the Shep rebuild would take care of it. It turned out that all the gears were toast due to the tranny being ran hard on low fluid. The bill then came out to 3k+, also I went with the 4.11 final drive plus all the works. Also the transfer case was also bad (Owner never told me) and that was 2k+ to fix and upgrade the transfer case (Stage 3) with Shep.

You will save money, headaches and heartache by just waiting and saving money to get a clean well maintained car.
