Using LS style v-8 coils on EVO 8/9. Will it work?

Hey evom.
Yes I can spend 500-600$ on an sparktech kit.
But I am wondering if some ls-1 v-8 coils will work on an EVO?
They can be had for dirt cheap.
I could make a cop for under 50$.
I have a friend that uses them on his turboed Honda with an aem ecu. Makes 520 at 22psi or so with no issues on e85. Beats the **** out of it every day.

Thanks

Pretty sure you would need a cdi to charge the coils. Or some other ignition source. The factory Ecu might not be compatible, otherwise it would've been done already.

The coils have 4 pins in them. Coil power. Coil trigger. PCM ground and coil ground. Verry easy to cure up. Just want to know if the spark dwell times or what ever you call it will work with an EVO ecu.
Thanks

You could also run 4 AEM smart coils off your AEM sequentially and have an ignition equally as strong as a $1000 Sparktech CDI unit

Fwiw get the truck coil with the heat sink built in.

http://m.ls1tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1249222&styleid=27

Wire it up correct and adjust dwell suitably well I don't see a reason for this to not work

I've read about the truck coils. If I can get my hands on some. I'll get them.

Thanks

Yes they will work. Your ecu doesnt care or know what coil you put in it Just remember to put in right values for dwell. If I remember correctly, about 5 ms max for LS1 coils.

I would prefer to use VW coil on plug. They are very powerful, built in igniter as well and cheap. Looks clean. You dont need any HT wires as they fit right on the spark plug.
I use these coils on every car they fit. Available in at least 3 different lenghts. Old Audi 5 cyl turbos, 4 cyl Ford Cosworth, Evo etc. Remember to lower dwell to about 2.0 ms@4 volt.

The VAG coils suck. I can't even begin to tell you how many of those damn things I've had to change. The reliability rate is crap.

You can utilize Honda coils from the civic or k series engines just fine. Can be had on ebay for about 40-50 a set.

I can pick up a set of 4 oem ls coils in town for 20$. Haven't inquired about the truck coils. Do some calling around after work to see if anyone has them locally.

I do have a set of Honda coils and pig tails laying around. They have ~50k on them. I just want something with more kick lol.
Thanks

I could mount them to the strut bar. Or tuck them under the intake manifold.
