does the motor and tranny need to come out together?

On a evo 8 can I just take the motor out without the tranny or do they both have to come out to get the motor?

I know the tranny comes out on its own. For the motor, its prob easier to take both of them out together..

How were you originally going to take out just the engine without a head?

If heads off at this point I would insert head studs/bolts into block and use those to lift from

I was wondering if it would be easier to take them both out the top at the same time or to take the tranny out the bottom then the engine out the top.

Took the head off to take to the machine shop. Then found out block has to be taken also. Blown head gasket

Lift both from the top.

Without a head, you can use trans bolts on driver side and will have to get creative on the other.

That's the way I do it, I just pull the transfer case and zip tie the power steering pump and ac compressor out of the way, I also remove the radiator to free up more room. Then set a pallet or crate under engine/tranny and set the car down on it and disconnect everything and just have someone watch and make sure everything clears as you lift the car up, but I'm doubting this guy has access to a lift, so talking about doing it this way is probably redundant.

It's all a preference thing. You'll be doing a LOT more work if you pull the trans first though.

In a home garage I pull both from above together. In a shop with a lift dropping it is way easier.
