Transfer Case Whine?

Hey guys, let me give a bit of history to paint the picture here.

Purchased my Evo IX from a member here 18 months ago and have had no significant issues to date.

4000 miles ago I was sick and tired of the current clutch in the car and wanted to change clutches, so also took the opportunity to send the tranny to a well known and trusted Evo Tranny shop.

4.11 final drive, evo 8 3rd and 4th were installed as well.

Now to the issue I'm having.

I'm getting gear whine from 55-80mph only when on throttle. As soon as throttle is lifted the whine stops.

I have 20+ years DSM experience and understand the importance of insuring the transfer case has the proper oem fluid and levels. In fact, I always over fill the fluid a bit.

I've since checked the transfer case fluid again by pulling the fill plug and as expected fluid can rushing out..hence it was not low on fluid.

I'm thinking it's the tranny itself, but wanted some other opinions from you guys.

It sounds like your tcase is almost due for a rebuild with new pinion/ring. You can still drive it until it becomes unbearable.

.... just wait, sounds basically normal to me. My TC whines even after replaced, off throttle its quite.

TC death whine happens in any gear at any speed no matter what, on/off throttle.
Mine was ridiculously loud, and I mean outside of the car loud, hearing it coming down the street.

Kinda sounds like the typical rear diff whine. Tcase whine is usually anytime the drivetrain is engaged. Most describe it as more of a loud siren sound. It's also quite unbearable in terms of loudness. I'd recommend just keep monitoring it and if it seems to progressively get louder, do some snooping. Otherwise, I wouldn't worry much about it. I've learned EVOs like to make noises lol.

Drop the transfer oil and see if it has a silvery fleck to it or not....

Tranny is back from the "well known shop", i'll finish the install tonight.

The shop did not find a cause of the whine from the tranny itself, but did find an unrelated issue with 3rd and repaired it under warranty.

I have pulled the inspection cover on the Xfer case and see clean/clear oil and ZERO issues, here's a few pics.

I can upload larger versions if needed later.

Tranny is in, but gear whine is still there

Not very loud, but definitely there.

Wear pattern in the tcase looks off. the pattern is hitting at an angle, and it looks like its riding off the heel of the ring gear. Hard to tell without marking compound.

James,

I think it's pretty likely that the T-Case is making the noise. If it were the trans the noise would change or disappear in a different gear. Glad to hear they fixed your shifting issue.

I sent my T-case to the same "well known" shop. My ring and pinion was still good and they shot-peened it and did some other goodies to an RS LSD I sent them. So far I have no T-case whine or issues. Of course I have some drivetrain noise from the trans, but I doubt I'll ever get it all to go away..

After 80 miles, I'm unsure they did anything, literally feels and sounds the same. I'll explore some other areas to look for improvement.

So far, Not happy after my significant investment.

Did you ever send the transfer case in for service, or just the transmission?

From pic. nr 1 it looks like the teeth pattern is not correct. But as said further above - Hard to say without marking compound.. It also looks to me you got quite a bit of wear on the crown wheel, wich also most likely means that your pinion is worn too. But again, a bit hard to tell from pics.

If you don't mind, I'll upload high resolution version of these pics...

Maybe you guys can confirm the abnormal wear before I tear it out of the car.

I'm trying to avoid further downtime as this is my DD...
