Lancer Evo VII RS2 Diff failure? help needed
hello guys.
I've just bought an Evo VII RS2 pretty heavily modified with fully forged engine, gt3076r turbo, twinplate clutch and running at about 470-480 bhp...
when i drove it yesterday for about 200miles, i noticed some kind of noise coming from the transmission and tested it a bit. the noise was there anytime when the car was rolling so it wasnt a gearbox noise but probably a diff noise.
then few miles after. (i had to drive 500 miles back home) i noticed smell of oil coming from somewhere when i was driving and opening the windows.. and then started the nightmare i had no more transmission... after a small acceleration. when the car was stopped i noticed that the propshaft was still running making noises but nothing happened, car does not move at all.
so i checked under the car and found smoke going out from the rear diff and fat grease coming out from the rear driveshafts (wheelside)
so my question for you guys is... do you think i could be sure i need to replace the rear diff + shafts, or just the diff? or do you think the problem could come from the front diff?
if the rear diff is gone, the car should not move at all? because if there is no more rear diff working, the front diff should still work and the car should move dont you think?
just asking, because i had to keep the car in a local garage where the problem happened and now i need to source the parts to go there and repair it to bring it back home... so i dont want to make 400 miles for nothing and i want to be sure that the problem comes from the rear diff or rear diff + shafts and not something else...
thanks for your help guys, it is much appreciated!!

It has Super AYC differential.
Something is not good with it.
I know that in Switzerland you don't often service the car by yourself, you use professional garage.
My advice is to take it to people that can drop the AYC diff out, and than open it to survey the damage: Bermani who built Hans Schori and Toni Bueler's Twin Charged Evo certainly can service your Evo, and there are few more Lancer Evolution specialists in Switzerland I have visited their websites.
You have two basic options: Fix what you have (AYC system) or change to RS.
Now: you can upgrade to Evo X AYC differential- which is stronger and improved in all ways. It should fit right in, and there will be one snag- I believe that the Left (Driver) side Half-shaft Output Flange, so the flange/output CV joint for half-shaft... is different and needs to be customized by using Evo X output flange on Diff, and Evo 7-9 HalfShaft half of CV joint.
Please contact

Dan has done just that, installed an Evo X AYC into Evo VII using the custom CV joint- using OEM parts, and he can explain what needs to be done.
RS is an option: but you need complete rear cradle (subframe) and differential, half shafts, and driveshaft. That is a lot of parts and swapping.
I believe that its easiest to find a used EVO X AYC diff, and simply have knowledgeable person configure you the cv joint to suite.
You could also simply ask Dan to sell you a configured half-shaft or joint...and ship it to you...shipping is not going to be that bad and it can be at your doorstep in a few days.
Best of luck, let us know how it goes

the only problem is that i need to fix the car on tuesday as it is about 500 miles away from my place and i need to get it back asap! i can not leave it out there
so from what i explained do you think it should be the diff and not the front diff / transfer that got a problem?
anyway swapping with my evo IX parts is straight bolt on ? it should fit easy. and this is the easiest way for me to proceed right now, and then after i'll check what i'll do. because i really need to fix it to drive it home

Hello All,
Finally picked up a neglected 2005 EVO 8 MR with 11,430kms in 18 September. Since then I've been working on paint restoration, engine maintenance / upgrading and tidying. Spent the entire weekend ridding of all the stickers not the vehicle and removing the BRIDE seats installed to revert back to stock MR Recaro Seats.
My dream JDM... EVO 8
Garage Queen no doubt!
Probably the cleanest looking engine bay until, she becomes my daily driver. Fully tuned and built by Ohura-san of HKS Japan.
