Oem Main studs vs. ARP main studs Problem

Hello Evom,

To make the story short, machine shop f*ck up
With thier work.

Sent to them my block, crank and aro main stud
For machining and honing but instead, they aligned /honed it with Oem main Stud (torqued to spec) eventhough i sent them my arp main studs.

They told me that they Don't wana stretch the arp thats why they torque the used oem. and i can just switch to arp and torque them to arp specs. Whaaat??

My question, are they right? Or my gut is right that install the arp stud and torque and align honing?

Wtf? Please help

I just got my motor built a couple months ago and the machine shop used the ARP studs i brought in for honing. I think the torque spec on the OEM bolts may be lower and the ARP main studs are higher so it might throw off your clearances

OEM bolts, you mean?

Studs can change the shape of the bore, so they need to be machined as they will be used. Any decent machine shop shoulda know that.
They should also know that one of the points of a stud is so you can re-use them; they aren't torque-to-yields like the bolts.

The OEM bolts aren't torque to yield. They can all be reused.

There's no point in using ARP studs. They're not going to fix any problems because there aren't any that are fixable with them.
They use more torque so that extra torque causes distortion which needs machining to eliminate it (align honing of the main tunnels while torqued to spec).
Then you can't go back to stock bolts without more machining.

Not all machine shops have the correct tool for align honing the mains.
That's the most common reason it doesn't get done.
'cos it doesn't need doing.

I guess I gave his machine shop more credit than they deserve. I assumed that's why they didn't want to reuse them.

OP: for what it's worth, I wouldn't go the main stud route unless you are okay with the extra work. I've always stayed with the bolts. No problems here, though I've never had more than 350tq and 450hp
