I have an odd noise coming from the evo 9 when above 4500 rpm (i havent tested under load as I'm in clutch break in period and I would prefer to tune the car first)

current test situations are under no/light load on the road and in neutral

sounds like a fast paced geiger counter (not as loud) or a random ticking/vibration but i only hear it from inside the car and not when i'm listening at the engine (engine may be to loud)

I doubt its knock/detonation because its not under any sort of load condition

Also no noise at idle or at any rpms lower than 4500 even under load

Just checked oil pump sprocket alignment/timing and it seems to be correct
Procedure:
turn engine to tdc, removed 14mm bolt at shaft location and insterted a straw (went a ways in)

turned engine further near bdc and inserted a straw (stopped at about 1 cm)


but if the shaft is aligned at every other 360 degrees (or in other words every 720 degreees) wouldn't it stop the straw/screwdriver every other 360 degrees?

Ive also heard it called a front balance shaft (not sure what the correct terminology is)

Update: i pulled timing cover to be certain about the front balance shaft/oil sprocket timing and it was correct... It also verified my previous 360/720 degree question

idler pulley and tensioner pulley had small peices of dirt and gravel in them and have play in the axial direction of the bolt (forward and back)

could this be making such a noise?

RESOLVED!

Vibration was a result of a very stupid move of mine...

The engine only had one hoist hook... I moved it to the back right of the engine during the clutch replacement and left the bolt and washer in the front hook location...

Washer was vibrating nothing serious...

Reminds me of the guy who wrote in all in a panic, his car was making a horrible noise. Turned out that piece of tin at the bottom of the bell housing was bent and hitting the flywheel. Anyway, good find.
