That's a forged Manley crank I believe.

Damaged bearings. Otherwise the head looks fine. Possibly Crankwalk.

OP, when you have a moment, make sure you post in the official blown motor thread. It's an entertaining thread where we discuss engine failures, history, causes, and potential solutions for the future.

Seriously this is too painfully to look at and read. I mean come on, every engine block has a hole. Almost all of them caused by oil starvation. Damn

Thank you very much for posting this video. Much apprenticed. I never knew how the oil system worked on the Evo.

But one question for you guys, So is it a bad idea to delete the balance shaft according to Jafro????? From what I watched on the video, It looks like a bad idea because you are deleting oil ports.

The only oil ports you are deleting are for the balance shaft itself. It will raise your overall oil pressure to some extent, but changing oil weights and having proper bearing clearances can also have an effect on it. This can be an issue for engines with already bad crank case pressure issues, but in general a balance shaft delete is not a bad idea.

If you delete your oil squirters, your balance shafts, install an HLA, and run 20w50, your oil pressure will be crazy high though!

That crank definitely looks cracked. Once a crank cracks it's all bets off.

Once the crank cracks you've got a 95% chance of there being bearing contact and it all goes downhill from there.

I hate that this thread now applies to me. But. Here we are!

Date: May 24th, 2019
Year: 2003
Mileage: 136,xxx

Modifications: Previous owner had reported JE pistons and rods, ACL bearings, and HKS cams, but I have no paperwork to prove those claims. Also on the car - Precision turbo of some size (no paperwork, no visible numbers on the housing. Thanks previous owner), 750cc injectors, exhaust.

Power: Previous owner claimed somewhere in the 400's, but again, I have no paperwork to prove this. Also, the external wastegate had been having issues staying bolted to the turbo (see my build thread for all the info there), so I know the car wasn't performing at peak potential when this happened.

What Happened?: I was just leaving the parking lot from dinner with some friends, going maybe 20-30mph, didn't even have my foot in it because of the traffic lights. My gas light had just come on, so I was en route to the gas station to fill up. Car was running fine, then just... Stalled. No stuttering, sputtering, or any kind of weird noises. It just died, and never came back to life. During the motor teardown, it was revealed that one of the tension pulleys for the timing belt had come loose and caused the timing to get all out of whack. Pistons, meet valves. In a glorious fashion. See pics below.
Solution: Still in the process of figuring out the next steps for motor replacement.

Pulley right by the water pump is the culprit. The bolt had come loose and allowed the pulley to shift out of alignment, causing the rest to happen.

the impact of valves and pistons had a lasting impression on my lifters. all but one intake lifter sheared off and came to rest in the bottom of the head.

So about those pistons and valves.....
Like 6 valves snapped off their stems and came to rest on top of the pistons. Or in them.. I plucked at least one valve out of each piston with pliers... Cylinder #3 had one lodged in the new hole in the top of the piston, and cylinder #4 was cracked all the way across......

Needless to say, the car was very unhappy. I am currently in process of researching replacement parts for absolutely everything.
