hey guys, so I’m going to Reno this winter to go snowboarding and taking my evo 8 with me. I’m from the Bay Area and I run an fp green with full bolt ons on Valvoline VR1 20w-50 (high zinc) because it’s easy to get near my house. Haven’t had any issues with this oil whatsoever even with the 20w. My question is, since I’m heading up north where it will be snowing, I will be switching oils. Now, I’m looking on FP’s website and they only have 1 oil with high zinc on the list with a 5w. I’ve been reading a few threads, everyone saying switch to a 5w at freezing temps. But, I haven’t found a true answer with someone equipped with an fp green or any fp turbo that requires high zinc. Will I be ok with 10w-40 Amsoil Dominator oil?

i'd run 5w30 red line or 10w30 zrod.

FP states 20w50 is required. However, given the temps and conditions, a call to FP to pick Robert's brain wouldn't hurt. And Robert doesn't mind talking on the phone. Also, given the snowy conditions, you won't be running the car hard, at WOT under heavy load for extended times, so oil for the turbo isn't quite as critical.

That being said..

You can get synthetic 20w50, they aren't quite as molassesey as dino oil in cold temps. Zrod 20w50, or you can find a synthetic 15w50 or even 10w50 with high zinc, you'll be good.

Is your turbo journal bearing or ball bearing?

My fp green is a journal. So in regards to what you were talking about the 20w-50, I can just stick with my vr1? Are you sure? Even in that ice cold weather? Because I was reading a few other threads and noticed a whole bunch of people saying that even a 10w is too thick.

Getting a synthetic will be better, they have a much lower pour point. Again, you could always call FP. They will have the most sound advice.

I have FP a call, and they said i’d be fine with a 10w-40 in that weather. I’m going to hit up Amsoil and get me some dominator oil

They don't make Dominator in 10w40. It's 5w20, 10w30, or 15w50.

Well, if the 30 in 10w-30 doesn’t make that much of a difference, I’m just gonna run vr1 since they make 10w-30. I’m sure I can find a spot near me that sells it. No point in me spending a lot more on Amsoil when Valvoline has been treating my car well.

I heard Rotella t6 has high zinc in their oil. Can anyone confirm this? I used to run my evo 8 on Rotella T6 when I was On stock turbo.

Rotella has high zinc. You could run their 5w40 synthetic. 30 vs 40 weight oil is a big difference in viscosity.

Rotella t6 5w40 synthetic. Been running it for 3 years on e85. Oil stays honey golden. Even at 153k miles
