Is my engine no good?

Hello, I am new to the Evo seen with my son. We bought a 2005 Evo and probably got ripped off.

We only drove it a few times and there she blows. So, I think. A spark plug came out of the top of the engine.

For a second seen a little bit of fire.

I should have known something was up with a good maintenance record until the title came back with the mileage being off.

What should our course of action be? Thanks!

Find a local shop that specializes in evo's and take her there. Also prepare your wallet. Expect to spend a couple hundred just having the car gone over to see what kind of money pit your dealing with. Could be pretty shallow, could go to china lol. Sorry for the bad luck, hopefully its not too crazy.

Agreed with the above advice.

Since you specifically mentioned a spark plug ejection, I fixed a blown spark plug in my 05 Montero (3.8) with the Timesert kit and it has held perfectly.

There are regional forums on this site where you can get a recommendation for a trusted local shop to look it over.

Good luck!

I am glad I have an empty wallet already. I just rebuilt my 64 Impala SS.

I guess I will be selling my 95 SS Impala to get the Evo paid off and fixed.

I hope to find a good shop in Colorado Springs, CO.

also, its very easy to take off the spark plug cover and have a look. a harbor freight compression gauge is very cheap as well and easy for about anyone to use

Set the car on jack stands, drain the oil, remove and inspect the oil pan. If the oil pan looks like a glitter farm (golden metal shavings etc) then stop here and send your car to an Evo Specialist... not some high dollar well certified shop. If the oil pan inspection looks fine with no signs of metal shavings then proceed as follows:
remove all debris at the cylinder in which you had the spark plug issue, this is assuming the spark plug may have broken off (Very important). Now with a flashlight inspect the piston regarding the spark plug issue and check to see if there is any noticeable and severe damage to the surface of the piston. If there is then stop here and send the car to an Evo Specialist. If the piston looks fine and no damage then remove the remaining spark plugs from the engine. Grab a half-inch drive ratchet and extension and turn the engine by hand (Clockwise) a few rotations. While turning if the engine binds or stops completely, more than likely you have bent a few valves due to skipped timing and would only need to have the cylinder head inspected and rebuilt (replacing bent valves etc). Also would be a good time to check the remaining pistons to ensure there are no damage to them as well now if other pistons were damaged then you would be rebuilding the block and of course the cylinder head ($$$$$$). If the engine turns over without any binding or halts, and there are no damage to the pistons, and of course there is not metal shavings in the oil pan then you can call yourself one lucky individual. Chances are the spark plug was very loose causing your incident. I know this may seem like a lot to do but with the normal set of tools this is really easy and you should save yourself the money of inspection alone at a shop because this is exactly what they (Evo Specialist) will do. Rewardingly enough, it will be good to know what you're dealing with before hand in which you'll decide to park the car for now due to preparing for the funding of repairs etc. Good luck! I surely hope for the best.

Also there are a lot of threads on this forum regarding the tasks/procedures I have walked you through including the proper tools needed for removing the oil pan, and spark plugs... that's really all there is to it.

Wow, I think we might be able to try and do this; yes my 16 yr old and this old 43 old guy. I know computer stuff but this would usually scare me. But these are some great directions. I know it is hard to believe but at one time I tested high on mechanics compared to electronics.

for this being your first time following those steps above, it should take you half the day. you would be spending about a couple hundred minimum taking it to a shop for inspection and diagnosis. Nobody becomes experienced until things start to go to **** and break lol Welcome to the Evo world!
