Jerks and quirks

Hi mates, I bought a stock Evo 6 last week, very next day decided to take it for a bit of exercise as the previous owner said he hardly used the car.
From what little knowledge I have, the car works fine until it goes above 4000 rpm, then it starts to jerk and gives a muffled boof boof sound (best description I can give).
I checked the spark plugs (bpr7eix), the top was black like dry smoke, but overall they looked good, I cleaned them, and inserted them back in (I've already order a set of 4, will take about 2 weeks to get to me).
I checked the air filter and oh boy was I surprised, half was missing, it was deteriorating and fell apart and all through the maf sensor was dirty (I wiped around the plastic and cleaned the pipes, maf sensor cleaner should be here with spark plugs, and yes I live behind gods back it may seem). I replaced the filter sponge and put everything back on, and tried it, still the issue remains.

Any idea what might be causing me and my darling all this stress?

Also, I have a Greddy Profec B Spec II, and I'd like to know what settings I should put into it. I would like to be around 16 psi and not go above 19 psi.

Thank you mates.

so I cleaned the maf sensor today and took it for a run, I can see that it helped quite a bit. After trying to navigate our twisty and winding roads, I got a glimpes at the boost guage fly up to about 1.5 bars (aprx. 21 psi) and thats when it starts being a jerk. I then paid a bit of attention to how i applied the throttle, if I apply roughly half the throttle it goes pass all the way up to about 5500 rpm, maybe even 6000 rpm before it gives a slight jerk, and when I apply full throttle it spikes the boost and jerks at the 4000 rpm. Slowly and sure with everyone help I shall win this race. Any other suggestions?

2006EvoIXer I haven't gotten a chance to do the test as yet, mechanic seems to have too much on his plate, he said something week after next. sigh.

Still no settings for that profec B huh...sigh again

Can you set your Profec to 16 psi? Or turn it off to see if your spark plugs stays clean. Clean your plugs again and see if it happens with boost turned all the way down.

Also, check your hoses around Profec solenoid, turbo, and wastegate actuator. Make sure there isn't a leak or crack. If there is a leak, your boost will be higher.

You can use a bicycle pump to pressurize to 12 psi on hose to wastegate actuator and see if that opens your wastegate and hold pressure. If it holds, then take next hose and connect to wastegate actuator to check rest of hoses.

Ok, so I've messed with the Profec B and now depends on what gear and how I accelerate its now playing the *** around 3500 rpm..sigh..hate this..anyway gonna have what's suppose to be a professional look at it tomorrow after scheduling so Long ago, and hopefully he finds it and it's something simple and cheap..never expected all this stress..anyway I turned up the gain on the Profec B hoping that's what keeps the waste gate (if that's what it's called) closed a lil longer and see how that works..I have it set 55%, gain 20%, set gain (I think, whatever the 3rd is) at 17 psi, warning 19 psi, some sort of L% at 10, and it says peak 298 ( that doesn't seems to change)...so sigh..fingers crossed, tomorrow

First of all, Congrats on your purchase & don't look at it as Stress, yes it's frustrating but you said the previous owner didn't use the car alot so you should give this car a Refresher/Tune-Up before boosting and most important is Tuning the car after all parts refreshed, you did say you're taking it to a professional. Evos can be a jigsaw puzzle w/ out the picture so Good luck!

So another update..after leaving my sweetie with the "professional" for a day, he told me he believes it's either the maf sensor or a boost leak (no **** Sherlock), he says to bring it back on Monday and leave it for 2 days ..so I changed the engine oil today (easy), and tried to to the gearbox as well, I'm still thinking of how I can get the f-ing bolt off, neither the drain or fill wants to come out, I left that alone, sigh
anyway I got excited after taking it for a run (don't know why), so now, what I did was try get my rpm up to 5000 without boost, and, no jerks or quirks..2nd and 3rd gear, couldn't do any other gear with all the twist and turns of our roads (no such thing as a highway where I'm from), I just slightly gave it gas and let the speed and revs build..also what I noticed, is that even when left in neutral and idling, the AFR reads around 16.5 and the engine dips low and goes back normal and repeat..on cold, it's a lot of the times up to 1500-2000 rpm..what do you guys think?

MD345787 maf sensor is around $600USD, I have in a E5T08172. I'm not sure if I should get another E5, or if anyone can recommend a suitable affordable replacement?

Another update, I tried a maf sensor from my friend's Evo 4, E5T07072. The car worked a lot better, I can tell there's still a few hiccups, but it worked better. I tried looking for 1 of those, but they are all used, and on eBay, and eBay scares me, especially used stuff. I can find new Evo 7-9 maf sensors for the same price as the used. Question is, can I use 1 of those maf sensors?

Have you considered removing the MAF & going Speed Density?

Also, are you a member of the MLR? These guys know your model very well?

Heres a thread where a member discusses how much better his 6 runs using SD vs MAF

Speed Density sounds like it's a worthy project, but I just got the car and want to enjoy it a little. Also we don't have tuners where I live, the ones that say they can, just end up messing your car up. I do have in a Greddy Ultimate piggy back, so I do think it is possible to have it done.

Haven't even had the car a good month yet, and that sucker told me it was working great, he's just moving to a new country.
