Transfer case to transmission threads stripped (2)

2 of my bolt threads that that hold the transfer case to the transmission are stripped. I do not know how. I only used handtools when replacing the t/case. This is he threads in the transmission. What are my options?

There's some things that can go wrong when installing thread inserts. If you're not a seasoned mechanic you might be better off hiring the work.

I’ve installed thread inserts before, I just wanted to check my options. Wasn’t a big fan of a longer bolt/nut solution. I figured a thread insert/heli cool would be a better solution.

Yeah it can happen very easily with AL threads with reinstalling hardware that is sandy or gritty. I made the same mistake one time on my trans after pulling the thing like 3 times that day and got lazy. So I got to pull it out again and helicoil it. Its really easy to do but do it on a bench not in the car.

Helicoils are garbage. Use a Timesert: http://www.timesert.com/html/mtrcsert.html

I've never had an issue with properly installed helicoils or timeserts. I wouldn't say helicoils are garbage.

Fair enough, I don't know the quality of the installations on the helicoils I've come across. I've had three helicoil repairs fail over the years and four successful Timesert repairs.

I've heard Keenserts are also good but don't have any experience with them.

I will agree I've watched people mess them up. You have to be pretty steady when drilling to make sure the hole is straight and doesn't get wallowed out. If the hole is oversized due to letting the bit walk or something like that, the insert no longer fits as tight as it should and can be a problem. I've also seen them where people don't thread the insert in quite far enough, so the top "thread" is susceptible to being pulled. Like with most things, they have to be done correctly.
