MHI FP Red on stock block/head/cams?

Hey all. Looking at going FP red here soon. Current supporting mods

Wally 255
FIC 1200cc
TBE
Injen Intake
LICP
3.5 IC

I want to slap a turbo on and not open up the engine if at all possible, until I really need to.

goal is around 475 on E85. Any input?

An fp green can easily hit those numbers with better spool than a red. Hell, a 71hta will get you close with stock like spool.

8 or 9? Cams will go a long way, especially on an 8 (does the head count as opening the engine? probably ). You'll probably want an HTA71, don't you guys have problems in CA with visual inspections and CARB, and all that? I assume you also have a method of boost control, otherwise that's a definite must.

True but will need cams to get close the 475hp I would more like 430 hp maybe with he's current setup but all depend on the tuner. The spool will be the major difference with the top end. The FP Red top end is ridiculous I love it, it lag nothing like stock turbo but when power hit it hit hard! Look at my signature

It's an 8 and yea, have a grimmspeed ebcs. Part of the reason I want to go red, not green or 71hta, is to prevent it from spooling up too fast and have all that torque early on. I want to see how the red will perform with stock cams and head bolts if I keep a zero tolerance for knock on e85. I might set my slow knock CEL to 1 or 2. Lol

Torque can be limited in the low rpms with the tune (timing & wastegate duty/boost)

True! So you recommend going Green for 475 on e85, stock cams as oppose to the Red?

that depends on your tolerance for 200-300rpm lag to trade for 50hp up top

The red is a better bet, especially with the stock cams. I would do the red simply because it will have more room to grow.

That's exactly what I was thinking, and I'm okay with 2-300 rpm more lag. I figure I will probably run out of fuel with the 255. Any suggestions for fuel pump? Is the walbro 450 install a PITA?

It's not exactly straight forward if that's what you mean. FP red on an 8, you'll see 20psi by 4k rpm's. My car was 20psi at 4000, and 32-33psi by 4500rpm.

On my FP Green (MHI HTZ) I made 480whp before running out of fuel with a 255. 20psi by 3300ish RPM. Torque was kept at 350 to preserve my 6spd. In case you are considering not going bigger. Room to grow is a really good thing to think about IF you are planning to grow. A lot of people never do or don't for a very long time, so as long as you are being realistic about your plans.
However.. this was on a 9 with an S1 cam but also a 2.75" O2 housing, and stock IC piping (except for the LICP). But just some more info for you to consider.

You also have a 9. So delay that by about 4-500 rpm's for an 8.
You're literally the only person I've heard say a green is laggy. People rode in my car with the red, people with stock turbo 9's, and didn't notice the lag, at autocross..

I always qualify "Laggy" by stating which turbo I'm comparing to and that it's just my preference & why, not laggy in general. Also that I know I'm weird and most people will disagree with me.
I noticed the difference during AutoX (our courses are small) and daily driving. Since I want to have fun no matter where I am, and I don't drive around town at 6k RPM, I wasn't happy with the green.
Or maybe something was wrong with mine, seeing how it blew up after a track day.
All I know is it was fine on the road course, but that's about it (for me).

Alright guys, to update this thread.

I went with the HTA71, then quickly decided it wasn't what I was looking for, that big top end. Now I got the HTZ Red on, and I'm loving it! Definitely has some lag, but nothing to complain about. It pulls crazy hard once it spools up. Now my question is, how much boost is safe to run up top? I can tell that it will hold whatever boost you want it to. I'm on stock headstuds, wondering if it would be stupid to hold 32psi out the top? Need some opinions. I know if I encounter knock I'm asking for lifted head. Thinking about sticking with 30 to stay "safe"
