Cam noise at idle...

Hey guys, what's Up hows's it going?

So I'm having this super weird noise at idle only on like cold starts. Like on idle it doesn't sound that much but when I rev the car up to like 2500 rpm it sounds like a kind of grinding noise and it sounds right inside on the cam gear, like on the cams but the closes part to the gears. (Like on the first cam caps.) The weird part is that once it warms up you can't even hear it. It's just on idle.

Inside the car it sounds like of it had a belt driven fan and it's annoying as heck every morning I try to use it. But I zeroed it down and it defenetly sounds like on the cam gears, like inside where the cam is.

My car is an 04 evo 8 (no mivec or anything.) Fully built with Kelford 272 cams and with BC springs and retainers with oem lifters. Belt is a Gates timing belt and everything pulley and tensioner stuff is new also. Also the belt is tension is up to spec and everything and I've double checked the tension on the top of the cams and it's good almost a 1/4" of a turn but on the tight side.

Another thing weird thing is that the sound like came on louder and louder with everytime o started it in the morning. (I only use my car on like weekends.) Also I haven't touched the belt or anything and the sound started a little over a month ago. I'm scared it might be the cams or something worst or idk! It's scary.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Haven't really tried that, I was kinda going to work it out today and see if i could find what the problem was but didn't do it. Just found out where it was coming from. But just for a reference to the sound, it sounds like if a pulley or something would have a bad ball bearing. Like that sound but only when it's cold and around 2500 to 3000 rpms. Once warmed up it's barely noticable.

I'll try that out tomorrow for sure.

Oh and another thing.

The car drives and runs like a dream. No problems, no misfires or anything though. Goes in to boost normally, holds boost and pulls just as hard as ever. Takes off and runs great and normally like always.

Suggest pulling the accessory belt and spinning the idlers and accessories by hand checking for roughness or noise.

I did exactly that and everything is good, every pulley spins freely and without any grinding or roughness in them. I think I might have found the problem but I just haven't had the time to finish it up and start it. But I think it might be my hydraulic timing belt tensioner. I took it out and it fully extended out but I can kinda compress it with my thumb and it has a little bit of play in the shaft. I installed an oem one now and I'll be starting it up and seeing if that's it. Cause the noise comes from the cam gear area.

Thanks for the reply.
