Clutch disengagement issue

Hi Guys,

I know there are a lot of similar threads and I have read some of them. But I'm hoping you guys can help me with my specific issue. My evo 9 has an Exedy twin disk clutch that has be great for years. When I moved from the southwest to New England, I stopped driving my Evo in winter, to keep it rust free. When I pulled the Evo out of storage, I started having an issue getting my car into reverse. The issue isn't that bad on initial startup. But, after driving for a while, there's not way to get into reverse... it just grinds. Similarly, if I drive in stop and go traffic, it starts getting hard to get the car into 1st gear. I adjusted the pedal out and bled the clutch. At this point, I'm thinking maybe it's a master cylinder problem... or vacuum booster or something like that. Can you guys help point me in the right direction?

Thanks,

How's the pedal feel? Also I would change the fluid. Inspect slave cylinder for leaks may be time for new one. Start there it's cheaper and easier change then master.

The pedal feels good. That was a good idea about the fluid too... I did try that already but it didn't work. I guess I could try slave cylinder before master. Would you agree it's down to those? (that would be better than digging into changing the clutch or something)

How long was the car in storage and was it a wet/humid place? If it was, may have corrosion built up on basket and plate fingers. And they're not sliding as smoothly.

Does it go into reverse easier if you go into 3rd or 4th and then reverse?

Yes, it was crazy humid out here and I didn't get it out of storage until mid summer. Going into 3 or 4th then reverse seemed to work a little better. If it is corrosion built up on the plate fingers, I'm guessing it's just easier to do a new clutch... is that right?

Thanks for your reply.

Just to catch this thread up. The clutch started feeling better as I drove it. I took to over to Kinetic Motorworks and had them take a look... it drove perfectly for them. Sure enough, I got it back and it seems to drive normally now. I'm going to keep driving it as-is. It makes me think that your corrosion theory may have been correct... maybe use is freeing it up. Thanks.
