Smile GSX and Evo 7

I'm planning on getting rid of my '01 Eclipse GT (or trade it in rather) for a 99 GSX. Ok here is my question: will the evo 7 motor use the same mounts and mains as the GSX? Are there any clearance issues? Will it fit nice and snug? Or is this whole idea blasphemous?

BTW anyone want to buy a Silver/black 5spd GT Eclipse? A bargain at $14,900 with 20,100 miles 100% Clean title and logged service work

Why would you swap an Evo motor for an Evo motor?

By only a marginal amount...lots of upgrades for the Eclipse 4G63 that make it nearly as fast. Besides, the Eclipses use the same Evo motor fomr the I-III, not any beyond that since the engines face the same way. Just keep the Eclipse the way it is.

Are there any differences in the internals between the two? Cam grinds, valve sizes, piston clearances, piston and rod strength...

What about the IIG DSM crankwalk? This is probably why he wants to swap out. I heard a rumor that if you keep your throwout and pilot bearing fresh, crankwalk becomes a non issue.

Is this true?

Yeah there's always the crankwalk issue to deal with for the 2G's. Lucky for him, supposedly the 99's are the least susceptible of the bunch. That's the only real "difference" on the internals of the motors...if you want to count that.

http://www.machv.com/ <---I don't have a GSX or GS-T but I loooooove this store. Delicious. You can scour around there if you want to make your DSM faster. They have a bolt kit that deals with the crankwalk issue (supposedly) and pretty much everything you could want for a DSM. http://www.machv.com/conracmbcadk.html

Ya, they are kind of infamous. 45-60K and KABOOM! THe crank walks right out of the journals! There is not a whole lot that you can do to prevent it. I heard a rumor that replacing the throwout and pilot bearing often helps alot, but it was pure speculation.

The GSX has a Evo III motor right? I have someone that can get me a JDM Evo 7 for cheap...that was partly why I asked about the swap
thanks everyone

Hopefully if it happens the crankwalk issue will be resolved
that ****'s scary

From first hand experience, I can tell you that no 2G turbo Eclipse is immune from the "crankwalk" problem. The only reason why the 99's have the least crankwalk is because they are still the youngest motors. People told me that the 98 and 99s shouldn't have this problem because it was fixed. WRONG I started to have crankwalk sympthoms at around 85,000 miles. The engine is still alive and produces tons of horsepower, but the clutch pedal freeplay dances around constantly, because that crank won't stay still. Everytime I make a left turn, the crankshaft is shoved over to the transmission and tries to push the clutch in.

I am not going to swap an EVO motor in. But instead, a 1G Eclipse motor will happily have to do.

EVOS vs Eclipses

Since the 1G's are known for having a stronger bottom end then the 2G's I don't think it is a safe assumption to say that any EVO motor is identical to any Eclipse motor. Mitsubishi could very easily have used cheaper components to make the 2G's cheaper for them to build (which has been proven by experienced DSM builders) so until somebody breaks down a few late model EVO motors and gets aquaianted with their internals, I believe that there have features unique to them that make them inherently stronger, at least, I hope they do.

Just from personal experience as far as witnessing, but, I'd think that a GS-T would be faster than the EVO in that the GS-Ts with similar mods to other GS-Xs (even in some cases, the GS-T had less mods) and won. This of course due to the drivetrain loss of a AWD car. So, anyway...

I dunno what my point was. Blah.

Not every 2g gets crank walk...if you maintenance it well, you should have no problem. My brother has over 90k on his 95 gsx and it has NEVER had crankwalk... Even with 325+ hp.
