Question Cam upgrade before exhaust?

Okay I did some research on past threads about the UTEC as a first mod and I know it can be done.

But what I'm not sure about is whether cams would be a good second mod. My car is currently completely stock right now, and I want it to look/sound that way for a little while, so I don't want to upgrade the exhaust for now. But I would like to improve performance.

So, assuming I get a UTEC to control fuel, timing, and boost, would cams provide any real gains on an otherwise stock car? Future plans call for a turbo upgrade, so would 272 cams work well in a stock car? Also, would I need cam gears? Seems the UTEC would be able to adjust timing without the need for adjustable gears...are there any other advantages to them?

A lot of newbie questions, but I appreciate any input. Thanks.

if you care so much about stock "sounding" that you are intentionally avoiding exhaust, then cams won't make you happy either. You can always hear a difference in idle on a cams car.

You would see some gains but where cams realy shine is in the upper rpms. And with the design of the stock exhaust system it will choke off your performance up top. But you will see some power increase.

Thanks. That's what I wanted to know. I'll hold off on cams until I'm ready to really start modifying.

The UTEC controls ignition timing not cam timing. These are two seperate tuning perameters. Ignition timing is where the ECU tells the spark plug to fire in relation to the piston position in the bore in relation to top dead center. Cam timing is where the cams themselves open and close the intake and exhaust valves in relation to piston position with (in a non MIVEC engine) zero input from the ECU. Adjustable cam gears alow you to tweak the cam timing to suit your specific setup.

I agree with the other guys that cams are probably not going to make much difference in a stock exhaust car. If I remember correctly Shiv from Vishnu performance has had good luck using adjustable cam gears with the stock cams, and that may be a better choice for you. I have no experiance with this myself though, just what I have seen posted here.
