Wink K&N drop in installed

Today I installed my k&N, this is my first 10km driving experience:

For sure there is an improvement in high rpm. 6000rpm and up.

Low and mid rpm I can't say if there is an improvement or not.

Maybe (guessing) the turbo lag increased a little.

This weekend I will do a 200Km of road use and will post my final impressions.

I recently changed out for a K&N Filter as well. Car felt a lot smoother overall with it, not necessarily a tangeable gain in my case although throttle response seemed much improved. Good cheap modification which saves you money in the long run replacing paper filters.

Make sure you guys check for oil saturation in the intake tract. The K&Ns come drenched in it. It can kill the sensor... or in my case, just make it run poorly after a several miles. After I cleaned all the oil out of the sensor with brake cleaner (use at your own risk), all was good again. After the initial oil flood all is well.

Put less oil on the K&N and you will not have problems.

That sounds like a much better idea...

Sorry, I thought maybe you had cleaned it and then were having problems. I know I read something about using less oil to keep the issues from happening.

I installed my new K&N Panel Filter along with a custom mandrel bent exhaust that I had made up today. Man, I can't believe all the extra power I have now and I am still at stock boost. Zeus, thanks for the over oiling warning. I took a 20 minute test drive and when I pulled off the filter, I found a nice puddle of oil on the the bottom of the air box. I'll keep checking the filter for the next couple of days and wipe off any excess oil I find. I guess I'll be heading out the drag strip this Saturday to see what my new mods will do.

I'd use this guy's suggestion (for a cleaner) and make sure you clean out the sensor its self. That's the part that can fry. Also, be very, very careful you don't screw up the honeycomb, or you are buying a new one.

After 200km of driving all I can say is that the car is smoother in high rpm and stronger in top end. I can't say anything about torque improvement because is difficult to measure small gains or loss.

I looked at the bottom of the air box and there was some oil, but I don't think that this oil entered into the air tract. I'm a little worried. What Do you guys think?

Another question: Could the computer decrease the boost because of increase incoming air?

If there's oil pooled in the bottom of your airbox it's a good bet oil has entered the intake tract as well - think of the amount oif air that's flowing through your intake. The pooled oil is only going to be from gravity during the time the car is not running.

I would damp it out with shop towels, to remove as much excess as possible. Better still, buy the K&N filter cleaning kit and use that to remove the exisiting oil and then oil up again sparingly.

The engine computer will take into account a number of things when controling performance. Essentially it will add as much fuel as possible for the amount of air measured by the MAF wire. It will keep doing this until it detects knock in the cylinders at which point it will start to reduce timing.

There have been lots of threads about after market intakes (both drop-in and cones etc.). I think I read somewhere that the stock intake / filter is good for 500hp, maybe more. The stock intake is not a restrictive factor to engine performance, but drop-ins and cones make a much sweeter sound!
