Cams for ATP 3071 turbo kit?

I know that almost nobody has any first hand experience with the 3071 kit from ATP yet but in theory what would be a good pair of cams to complement this kit? I’m not looking for extreme top end power, maybe not the right turbo for that anyway but rather good driveability, torque and good usable power across the revs.

Just to clarify, I have to use Japanese brands since I have money already accounted for at a Japanese vendor. Otherwise I hear Pipers are good but that’s no option I’m afraid.

I was thinking about HKS but it seem to be very hard to find any in stock even in Japan. Also JUN were out of stock, I was suggested Tomei 260 Poncams with 10,7mm lift on intake and 10,2 on exhaust. Anybody that knows how they compare to the HKS 264’s or 272’s? Tomei also has their 260 Procams with 11,5mm lift but I’m afraid they are too extreme and put usable power too high in the rev range. Also that kind of lift requires changing to upgraded springs and equal lift is said to slow down spool as lower lift ex cams does the opposite. Any comments, suggestions or ideas on this?

FYI I will also get adjustable cam gears to go with the cams which ever they will be.

Thanks,

I was on the phone with Simon @ Norris Designs who soon will be selling this ATP kit in the UK. He said to go for rather low duration but rather high lift cams to match the quick spool of the 3071 and get a good mid range punch. He said Tomei Procams 260 11,5mm in/ex would probably work very well, totally the opposite of what I thought (shows what I know ). All this with reservation that I didn’t get all he said correctly me being from Sweden and all

I take it there are several other cams that fit these criteria as some Pipers and maybe the JUN 264’s etc?

Still nobody that has any comments?

Listen to Norris, those cams will work well because that turbo has the capabilities of spooling early. The higher lift will lead to higher acceleartion curves and the duration is nice too.....another set of cams you might want to look into are the piper rally cams, the 265 duration 11.5 lift cams. I'll be running a larger turbo so my bottom end will be crap no matter what really so I'll be using tomei 270 procams with 11.5 lift.

I was just about to recomend the procams (since you cant go piper) Just remember that with high lift comes alot of valvetrain stress and a whole new set of valves, springs and retainers is a must. You have headwork already right?

Nope, no head work done yet, I was told to also get Tomei springs by the Japanese vendor but they mentioned nothing about valves or retainers? So just changing the springs is not a god idea for these Tomei 260 11,5mm lift cams?

I’ve heard about changing springs and retainers but nothing about changing the valves themselves?

This seams to be a problem for you guys in the states, all the vendors tell you to go with crapy HKS cams and stick with the stock springs and retainers. This is fine for the HKS units with their shallow profile but when you need a set of proper cams with a more aggressive profile (JUN, Tomei or Piper) people start to get confused.

The stock springs and retainers aren’t that good and the retainers are lighter than the JUN Ti ones! If you are getting cams from anyone other than HKS then you need the springs, retainers and gears to.

The man has spoken! What Norris has said is 100% true. To get better spool up and midrange torque then you need lift. 11-11.5 mm should be fine on a road car (I think but speak to a pro that’s not trying to sell you HKS). Go for a sort duration as it easier to get rid of the overlap in the inlet and exhaust valves that increases spool up.

I would recommend, with the circumstances that you have given, you go for either JUN 264’s or the Tomei Procams.

Hopes this helps some. Chris

Thanks Chris and everybody else, I have the Tomeis on order now toghther with their springs. Strangely enought Tomei doesn't seem to have any retainers for the 4G63 but I will be looking into that as well Any thoughts on which reatiners I should go for if I can't get Tomeis in the same order?

Hi, I've been looking like crazy on their page without finding any retainers for the EVO, any chance you could provide a link or a product no. or something?

Thanks,
Thomas
