Oil/ Warranty Question
Oil/ Warranty Question
I live in the Desert and want to use the Mobil 1 in the Red cap bottles (15w-50) just like the one the guy was holding in the Evolution Pit pass Video. Ha Ha.
My manual states to use 10w-30 does any one use the 15w-50? will mitsubishi vold my warranty. any oil temp experience?

It would seem reasonable to go to a 10w40 or 15w50 for areas with much higher ambient temps, such as the desert. I live in North Cal where average summer temps range between 90-105's and have always used 10w40 (Redline) in previous turbo charged cars.
I'd double check with your dealer, as the manual is very specific about using 10w30. It doesn't even give you the usual chart displaying the range of viscositys over ambient temperatures.
Bottom line, if you're doing your own oil changes, I think it's more important to change regularly and always use a quality synthetic oil. 15w50 or 10w40 would seem more applicable to desert driving, but it would be nice to get a Mitsu blessing for the warantys sake.
We know Mitsu monitors these forums and on questions such as this, it would be very helpful of them to provide some level of constructive feed back.

Usually, 10W-30 is the preferred oil for all turbo charged motors. Since the weight you want to switch to is thicker, Mitsubishi may not honor a warranty claim is they find out about it. The tollerances inside that motor are so wound tightly...just be careful. The trade offs for the difference in weight might not outweigh the risks involved. Go to www.bobistheoilguy.com and post there about your intent. Those guys no oil up and down and will give you a definitive answer. Hope this helps.

Thanks,
I was on bobistheoilguy. I think that mobil1 is some type of site sponser. I just dont think that the current mobil 1 oil is good enoughf. It is a thin 30wt. I found some valvoline max life full synthetic that is ACEA A3, and BMW long life certified. that has a higher HT/HS specs. has double the moly. and not fuel economy rated therefore not limited. or EPA mandated. I would like to see a Australia EVO owners manual?

In that case, I use Amsoil in all my vehicles. It's really good stuff. IMO, it is FAR better than M1. I had oil consumption issues with M1, where as to Amsoil, I don't. There is a wherehouse here in Las Vegas, so you would get it rather fast. Go here....

This is what I will be using in my OZ Lancer once I go FI on it. Right now, I am just using the 5W-30 stuff. Thats wierd that bobistheoilguy seems biast to M1. Most people used to post that Amsoil was better. I guess it's all up to what your personal experience is. They are all decent oils, but when it comes to FI, I would be really picky about what I put in my motor. You can even call Amsoils tech. line, and tell them what your intents are. They should help you out as well. They have always helped me, and just recently, I put some in my motorcycle. Awesome stuff and not too pricey.

BTW, I wouldnt recommend extended drains like Amsoil says. In order to do that, you need to take a sample of your oil and send it off every once and a while for an analysis. After cost of the analysis, you could almost replace your oil and filter anyway. That's what I have been doing at least.
I meant to say that bobistheoilguy blast Valvoline and is in bed with Mobil 1.
I agree that the M1 10w-30 will burn away. I have to use 15w-50 in all my old hondas to keep from adding 1 quart between oil changes. the 15w-50 is almost a diesel oil. I will check out Amsoil.
have you been using it long? how do your cams look. I heard that sometimes oil
can be to slippery and not cling to the metal during start-up and cause scuffing.

I have been using Amsoil in both of my vehicles since they were new. The Lancer is 2 years old and my 2003 Nissan Murano is about 1.5 years old. Excellent oil. I havent taken my engine apart lately, but from what I have read, there hasnt been any "too slippery" instances that I can recall. Send an e-mail (or call) to Amsoil's tech support and ask them that vary same question. Those guys are real honest and won't BS you. They won't tell you to use their product when it won't help. Their oil filters are second to none. They are really nice. Anti-flow back check valves and 94% filtration efficiency.
