5 sp. vs. 6 sp.
5 sp. vs. 6 sp.
what differences will there be in the new 6 sp thats going to be in the upcoming mr versus the 5 sp in the std evo 8?? im in the market but dont want to deal with my clutch only lasting 10-15K under spirited driving. anyone have any details on whether or not mitsu got the clutch right this time for the mr??
The clutch was right in the Standard or Evo 8 GSR model. The clutch is made that way to save the drivetrain. If they offered a strong clutch they would get more transfer cases and tranny problems. So the clutch is the part that is made to take the abuse. NOTHING WRONG WITH IT AT ALL!
I read somewhere that the Mitsu was having problems with the first batch of six speeds. There was a recall. I personally prefer the 5-speed. I have knowledge that the 4-speed 240Z trans was superior on the race track compared to the 5-speed trans that the 280Z used. the 4-speeds are stronger the overdrive 5th gear is not a power gear and is for fuel economy. I think that this can possibly be the case with the 6-speeds vs 5-speeds in new cars. The gearing seems to be geared towards 0-60 times for the mag tests and fuel economy. I do not see any real performance advantage with a 6-speed unless you are going for top speed and have the Torque to push the car. That is why I prefer a proven 5-speed any day over a 6-speed designed for the street. custom gearing? that is a diferent story.
People seem to think that more is better, or bigger is better.
Just my Opinoin.

In the MR, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd are the same as in the regular 5spd. 4th and 5th are revised to considerably improve the car's ability to build speed past 90mph, though it may annoy drag racers a bit (having to definitely shift into 5th).

I've heard from people that drove 6 speed Evo shifter that it doesn't feel as good as the 5 speed but honestly I wouldn't mind having one extra gear.
For drag racers it's a downside however road racers should see it as an advantage since more gears should allow you to always stay in the rpm band where you have max power/torque.
Looking at Tsukuba results showed 6-speed Evos posted better numbers than 5 speed ones.
