Can't decide on cam choice for Buschur Stg 4/BR440
I'm upgrading from Buschur Stage 2 to Buschur Stage 3 this weekend and I cannot decide between 264/272 w/gears and 272/272 with gears. As soon as I make up my mind one way, I start to reconsider. This is driving me nuts!
Later this season I'm going to install a BR440. (I actually already have the kit.) Is there an obvious choice here? This car is not my true daily driver, but it's not race car that's just driven back and forth to events either. I don't want stalling issues with a reflash for engine management and I care about maximizing spool-up, particularly with the larger turbo. Please help me decide. Thanks. |
With the smaller turbo, what I've seen more often is the desire for quick spool, good TQ low in the rev range and willingness to give up some absolute HP at the top end. With that in mind, 264/264 is the way to go.

Why don't you PM Mr. Buschur and see what he would recommend for that turbo. I would think it depends on your goals for the car.

264/264 seems like it'll be good. i like 272/272 when you have an upgraded turbo,but the 440 probably will be sweet with the 264s in there

Wow...I was expecting most folks here to say 272/272. I definitely didn't expect to hear that even 264/272 was bigger than optimal, especially with the slightly larger turbo.
Anyone else? |
I'm also in the same boat... I Will be going with 272's many tests have shown more HP through the RPM range (stock turbo)... I know people say you must have a bigger turbo to see them really shine but I have seen alot of dyno graphs saying other wise...

I've been in a 264/272 car that I thought felt great and didn't exhibit any of the vices of a too big cam choice, so I'm not inclined to go for the 264/264 combo. In my 95 Camaro I took the safe route when I chose my cam upgrade and I always wished I had gone a little bigger. Sure the car idles perfect and passes emissions without a problem, but my goal was a 115 mph trap speed and it has never gone better than 113 mph. It also missed the running in the 11s by 2/10ths. :crap: 115 mph is still my goal once I get this car to the strip and I'm hoping that I can hit that on the Evo easily with the Stage 4/BR440 combo without having to abuse the car too much. Of course, I'm not going to even try to drag this car until I replace the stock clutch. Hopefully it will live on the street behind this combo until I'm ready to replace it next year. Thanks. |
I've sat in a 04 EVO with 264/272, very nice and strong pull down low with excellent top end. If the BR440 will indeed bring up the power curves parallel to what the stock turbo gives, what I said above about the cams could be expected, but maybe even more violent. :)

If your going to a 440 and all the supporting mods then I would think 272/272 is your best bet. Why buy bigger later? It's not like you are trying to put 280s in.
Buschur is your best answer to your question, though. |
264/272 went in today. I was surprised at the drivability. Other than the car loping a bit on a cold start, there is no loss of drivability. And the warm idle is very very close to stock. Pretty much like stock with just an intermittent miss, like a car that needs new plugs/wires (and even the stock idle wasn't perfect once I installed 660s). Definitely not a thrumming lope by any stretch when warm. No low speed drivability issues or anything. I thought that the cam in my Camaro was mild, but this is like no cam change at all pretty much. I don't regret not getting the 272s because I don't think I need them at this stage, but I think I would have had no problem living with the straight 272s based on these. Definitely very glad I didn't do 264/264.
No opinion on power yet. Still in the break-in period. Now all I have left to do is bolting in my Buschur FMIC. Still trying to figure out if I have to tap the outlet pipe from the turbo for my electronic boost controller. I think I do unfortunately based on the instructions that came with the controller. Tapping the BOV line or the manifold isn't the recommended approach.:crap: |
