Don't like that sound

My 03 Evo (second owner) has recently giving me an intermittent sound when hot, and it has been hot in VA Beach recently. It is a metal on metal sound, a tone, not a grinding noise. I hear it when downshifting and bringing the card down from speed and braking at the same time; at a moment of highest G load right at the friction point. The sound is brief and rather quiet.

It doesn't always do it. My Evo is on a dealer rebuilt transmission, which failed under the OO. It's up for having the trany oil replaced, I'm hoping that it will help. The shifter has been getting a bit balky, especially while shifting quickly.

Any ideas?

i hope your trannys not gone or about to, how many miles is on the car , do you have a warranty that will fix it.

rartist Jun 17, 2005 05:52 AM

The rebuild was done at the OO's expense, the W is gone. The car is at 30k now, don't know how old the trany is. It had better not fail. Other than the minor balk, it feels ok, the clutch feels good. I believe the clutch is aftermarket, the name slips my mind, a stage II performance clutch.

if it does and they will try to get you to buy another. do you have any mods, because if you dont you might be able to get them to fix it.

rartist Jun 17, 2005 06:03 AM

No mods. The dealership that sold the car said the W is gone when the OO busted the trany. Another local dealership has done W work on it without argument, tho nothing deep. I could try taking it to this other dealer and see if they can work on it. The last thing I need right now is a huge repair bill, and to be w/o my car for a week or more.

If I knew then what I know now about the car, I wouldn't have touched it. The OO tried to put in a boost controller, messed up the vacuum lines. I have had the replacement lines on order for six weeks, they are due monday. The car has been operating on reduced HP ever since, maxing out at 14psi.

Wow I'm surprise you bought the car   :crap:

if you end up having to get another tranny dont get it from the dealership. I have a spare one i was going to send it off to get bulletproofed, but I decided not to go with a stroker kit. I hope the dealership will fix without you having to pay check the other one and good luck just remember if you need another tranny look me up.

I didn't know the history of the car, Carfax came back clean. Evo's are rare in my part (nothing to compare it to), it wasn't until I put a boost gauge on it that I found out what was up. The trany problems are recent.

I live on the east coast (why the car was a hard find, evo's on only one side of me), there's not much Evo related here. It would be a bug hunt to find a good shop that would do the work.

good luck, but dont rely on car fax they have only been known to be right about car accidents. nothing else related to the car.

What's the best oil to use in the trany, and how much do I need?

nastyevo8 Jun 17, 2005 07:40 AM

use the same tranny oil use at the dealership. I am pretty sure it is the best one.

Could be some parts of your car just need to be greased up ... it doesn't sound like a big issue to be as long as you are not getting a loud whining noise or a big grinding noise or a lot of clunking and rattling noise .... have a car checked up just to be safe ... remember the EVO is naturally a loud car

rartist Jun 20, 2005 11:16 AM

This noise is new, and not loud at all. I have to turn off the radio to hear it clearly.

I spent 12 years driving a 91 Mustang GT ragtop with a 5 speed, and developed a habit of downshifting with braking, mainly to keep the back end in the back. I tend to do that a lot with my Evo, and it's only then when I hear the noise (briefly at just the point of max G load), and only when it's hot.

I'm going to make an appt. to get the car in and looked at, get the trany oil changed. Otherwise, the car seems fine.

My vacuum hoses & restricor pill set is due in today (after a six week wait), so I'm going to have more issues to sort out, hopefully good ones.
