20G-9 Install Can't get boost under 1.7 bar?

Ok I really hate to create a thread as this is probably something obvious.

I have my Hallman cockpit MBC (steel ball) set at 22psi on my stock turbo before doing the swap. I turned it several turns down before taking the 20G-9 out for the first time.

The hallman won't turn down anymore.. The little hole on the hallman is not clogged. I am running the upgraded actuator from Buschur.

Any thoughts or idea's? My only idea is to take apart the hallman and rebuild it.. but there really shouldnt be any reason to :\

I did put 100 octane in the car just to be safe until I can get the boost down under 1.5 bar.

Try removing the Boost controller from the mix.. run straight off the wastegate spring and see what happens.

bypass your mbc and see what the wg is set to, can you adjust?

It's just like the stock wastegate.. it's the one off the EVO9 I believe.. I can adjust the actuator arm.

Could it be I didn't preload the wastegate acutator arm enough and it's opening up too soon?

Edit: brb unhooked mbc...

Let us know what happens with no mbc..
Btw
too much preload = more boost
Less preload = less boost.
Have to find a common ground.. Set the actuator arm where you want your boost at.. If the spring is not strong enough to reach desired boost then re install the mbc....

Isn't the actuator stronger than stock, or is that only if you choose that as an upgrade? I know that Buschur has one available for that 20g-9.

only if you purchase the upgrade, otherwise it is a stock actuator... :D

make a close loop between the neeple on the waste gate actuator solenoid and nthe nipple from the compresor, at that point you shoud be running whatever the waste gate actuator is set to.

That will prevent you from overboosting and it will give you time to find out the issue on the boost controller.

The rod on the actuator should ultimately by pass any other device as long as you are not using a MBC and as long as you have the close loop like I told you earlier.

Good luck!

Ok.. Looks like the actuator is right around 1.5 bar or just a hair below.. which converts roughly to 20-22psi somewhere in that ballpark.

I'm going to leave the mbc unhooked which will give me some time to take it apart and inspect it. In theory -- with the MBC turned all the way down I should be running the same boost as with only the wga?

Thanks for the help guys.. this stuff would normally be easy for me to figure out.. my brain/body is just worn from all the installation work.

The Hallman set to minimum will only run wastegate pressure if it's the weak spring. Like with the Forge, the soft spring will provide 0-10psi above the wastegate, but the stiff spring starts around 6-7 or so and goes much higher, so if you had the Forge MBC w/stiff spring and that actuator, your min boost would be 25-26psi or so...

Hmmmm.. Honestly I'm not sure what spring it is.. all I know is the ball is steel.

After turning down and down and down the knob would get stuck.. I assumed this was as low as it could go but I could have been binding. I've read somewhere you can adjust the little screw inside the mbc when this happens.

I'll tinker with it a bit more and see what happens.

justchil Jan 8, 2006 07:41 PM

Ok guys I turned the small screw inside the mbc counter-clockwise a quarter of a turn and now the knob turns like a mofo. The thread I had read about this said turn clockwise I believe but the screw in mine was tight already.

Too tired to take it for a spin but hopefully it will be the same boost as just the wga in the morning :)

I had the same issue with Upgraded WG. Its the WG that keeps flaper closed. Change back to the stock one and It'll run perfectly.

Zeus Jan 8, 2006 10:25 PM

If that is a stock actuator, you have it set too tight. Not only will you have a "high" minimum boost, but your wastegate flapper is probably only opening about 7 degrees or so. You will most likely discover boost creep issues shortly with it adjusted like that. Back it off about 2-3 turns.
