Cams

What is a window deflector? that probably is what is slowing you down!;)

I don't know about from 2k~4k. but for 3k~ 6k, 264s will give you a lot more than stock cams. I am using 264/272s it still gives me a lot in that area. I can imagine with 264s, you will have the monster torque.

I agree with gatorbait, the 272's and 280's are for higher up in the RPM band.

the 6.5 TME turbo did wonders for my bottom end. Spools like a mofo. And that's with 264's. I think it would be even better with stock cams in the 2-3k range.

HKS 264/272's.

LICP and 264/264S,. You wouldn't drive at 2000rpm in a daily basis anyway, the only time you are at 2000rpm is in first gear and first gear will make your turbo spool up very fast, besides that there are no major improvemnts at 2000rpm on any other mods, you are bellow the ideal turbo spool up range.

Anything above 2800rpm can be easily improved.

264's
Advance cam timing (cam gears) ie= +3/+3 or +2/0 , That should move your power band down (look at what Ted B did with his 280's)
TME turbo
maybe even shorter IC pipes
BR delux IC (very very short lower IC pipe)
Check for boost leaks
and a new custom tune

Ted B Jan 11, 2006 07:24 AM

True, but I don't recommend alternate cam timings like +2/0 with HKS 264s - unless you want to kill your top end. HKS 264s just don't have enough duration to make alternate cam timings really worthwhile, simply because you have to give up too much of one thing to gain something else. HKS 264s are best for those who are just going to put them in without the benefit of cam gears.

ted b what you runing your 280 at.

and dave from BR said that all cams 264, 272, and 280 all have same TQ but its the top end that is diff in power. like 280 have 15-20 hp over 272. so im not sure what to say in this. but i would think dave would know what he is talking about.

Ted B Jan 11, 2006 08:15 AM

My 280s are set at +2/0.

David's comment regarding torque is pretty much the case, assuming they are all run straight up (via factory cam gears). Both torque and hp can be manipulated via alternate cam gear settings.

Which cam you want depends on your ultimate goal (which should be realistic). If you want a good cam set that you can toss in and make good power and tq, with good low speed power and better top end than the factory cams, the HKS 264s (or other maker's equivalent) is a solid choice.

If your intention is to make more top end power, a larger cam set is probably what you want. You can still get all the torque and low speed performance of a smaller cam set, but it will require some additional hardware (e.g. gears), and a very good means of tuning.
