Will $5K get you into the 10's in a IX?

An older guy I work with who's into classic musclecars asked whether or not an Evo would get into the 10's for $5,000. I thought about it and thought it could be possible since one guy just did a high 11-second run with basic bolt-ons and a reflash (around $1500?). What do you guys think? Is it possible?

Let me just say that the IX would only have to do it a once or twice, not consistent 10's.

*edit*- I'm gonna somewhat change the proposition to reflect "with" or "without" labor included in the $5k price. In other words, could it be done using just parts and YOUR labor, or parts and a shops labor!! I personally could do alot of bolt-ons myself (I just wouldn't trust myself to cams and such) but I think it could be done if you installed the parts yourself.

If you agree w/me and think it could be done then post what parts you would use. Even if it goes to a little over $5k, it doesn't matter. I'm just trying to start some conversation in regards to this question I was asked.

Not for $5,000...

blkAMSevo8 Mar 23, 2006 03:55 PM

NO WAY, $10,000 is about the lowest

It would be close, if you didnt care about the car, just spray the hell out of it....

$5k just in parts or including labor and tuning?

beavis4g63t Mar 23, 2006 04:43 PM

how much nitrous do you want to spray?

gsujeff55 Mar 23, 2006 04:55 PM

you never include labor in a situation like this. if you can't put on bolt on parts by yourself, you don't need to be in a car quick enough to run 10s.

i would say YES, easily.

used turbo kit(2300)
intake filter(60)
cams(400)
clutch(1200)
bov(120)
injectors(200)

that leaves 800 for nitrous(if needed)

foreget it for 5k. the clutch alone would take up a good piece of that 5k

I think he wants a car that can make it down the track without blowing up, and no, without supporting mods such as FMIC, head and Main studs, Coated Pistons, and rods, and a strong crank, no Fing way

blkAMSevo8 Mar 23, 2006 04:59 PM

like i said 10 to 12 k in parts for high high tens

oops, forgot intercooler. ok, so no nitrous and intercooler. there is 5k. also you will need a tune, so get a bargain deal on some of the parts and get something to tune with(used utec is 400 bucks, flash is 400 bucks)

you don't need headstuds, you don't need pistons, you don't need none of that crap. he said it has to do it once. not like he wants a race engine that is built to do it over and over and over.

scorke Mar 23, 2006 05:03 PM

He says it would need to 10's once or twice, he makes it clear it doesnt need to be running these speeds/power levels every day, so he woudlnt need all that other crap. A crank? Who told you that? Head studs I see, but thats only another 90 bucks, so out of the 800 for NOS that jeff layed out in his little pricing plan that leaves you 700, which would cover a used FMIC and some pistons, and VOILA you have your setup....

hmmm....that seems WAY too good to be true. You didnt mention a full TBE which runs anywhere between 600 to 1000+....some sort of engine management system, a boost controller, fuel pump, professional tune/dyno time, reinforced engine parts, racing tires.....just to name a few.

keeping in mind...i dont own a 10 sec EVO, so i could be off
