All you ever wanted to know about Evo gearing and gear speeds

All numbers calculated using stock rim/tire size and rounded to nearest mph.
There can be a slight margin of error depending upon tire wear and deflection.

Legend
Gear- ratio- mph at 7000rpm (redline)- mph at 7700rpm (close to rev limiter on most flashes)

Evolution VIII 5 speed
1st- 2.928:1- 40mph- 44mph
2nd- 1.95:1- 60mph- 66mph
3rd- 1.407:1- 83mph- 91mph
4th- 1.031:1- 113mph- 124mph
5th- 0.72:1- 162mph- 178mph
Reverse- 3.416:1
Final Drive- 4.529:1

Evolution IX 5 speed
1st- 2.785:1- 42mph- 46mph
2nd- 1.95:1- 60mph- 66mph
3rd- 1.444:1- 81mph- 88mph
4th- 1.096:1- 106mph- 117mph
5th- 0.761:1- 153mph- 168mph
Reverse- 3.416
Final Drive- 4.529:1

Evolution VIII and IX MR 6 speed
1st- 2.909:1- 40mph- 44mph
2nd- 1.944:1- 59mph- 65mph
3rd- 1.434:1- 80mph- 88mph
4th- 1.1:1- 105mph- 115mph
5th- 0.868:1- 133mph- 146mph
6th- 0.693:1- 166mph- 183mph
Reverse- 2.707
Final Drive- 4.583:1

Hopefully you'll find this useful. The fourth gear info is definitely nice for drag racing. Moreover, I would love to have a IX 5th gear with my 4th gear. A good friend of mine has an IX and its awesome for passing when traveling at highway speeds.

Nice, how bout lower aspect tires with 17" and 18" rims :D

nice write up, so the first 3 gears on 6sp are almost the same as the 5, interesting...

You'll have to work those out yourself.

Nice write up! Looks like Evo IX 4th gear isnt going to be good for drag racing, its a 7mph difference between the VIII 4th gear and the IX 4th gear

Thanks, but I think the IX 4th kinda sucks once you start making real power. :( Definitely good for a lightly modded car, but I think even the stock turbo + complete exhaust + race gas/methanol tune will hit the rev limiter without much trouble.

Yeap, looks like mitsu made the car more towards autox and road racing friendly. An VIII is the best way to go for drag and a IX for autox and road racing

Their fifth rocks, though! Ours sucks. 8s go into snail mode on the 4-5 upshift. :(

i think you mean turtle mode... snails are what make us fast.

Personally I like the IX first as well, not nearly as dramatic a change as the old galant 1st gear in a DSM, but along the same lines....

Well Noize, since we're being helpful and all, I guess this is as good a place as any to put this. Since it's often hard to compare dyno charts, I made a little spread sheet that I use to compare them. It will take into account gearing, tire size, curb weight and drag coefficent. It is no substitute for real racing but it helps me visualize what changes to these parameters do to performance. You can actually compare completely different vehicles if you like, although I'd recommend you stick to one dyno for obvious reasons.

Anyway, I'll post it up here for anyone to use. Just don't charge anyone for it or claim it as your own. It's pretty simple to use, just enter the vehicle information in white on the "Vehicles" tab, then enter the torque figures for each car on the "Dynos" tab (it will calculate horsepower for you) and look at the comparisions charts on the "Graphs" tab.

The chart currently has my Stage 1 Evo 8 compared vs. a recent "Stage 1-ish" Evo 9 posted here. Mine was dynoed at Dyno4mance and the 9 on vishnu's dyno which by all accounts read pretty much the same. I don't know if it was a five or six speed, but it's easy enough to change with the info Noize posted at the start of this thread. And yeah, I wish I could have that additional torque in my car. ;)

Have fun.

Hey Noize, here's the revised edition of your gear ratio spreadsheet that I posted a while back. It includes info for the stock, HKS, and TRE final drive ratios.

Thread revival! I wish I could attach an Excel file. I have this thing down to a science now, including BMW 335 ratios and the nicely revised 2007 STI ratios.
